2023 King Edward Stakes & Bold Venture Stakes Odds

A super weekend of racing at Woodbine is headlined by two graded races, the G2 2023 King Edward Stakes and G3 Bold Venture Stakes.

A field of eleven are expected to make their way down to post for this year’s renewal of the King Edward where Shirl’s Speight will be making her first start since finishing fourth in the 2023 Group 1 Dubai Turf.

In the Bold Venture, all eyes will be on Patches O’houlihan who will be aiming to win the first graded prize of his career.

King Edward Stakes

Grade 2, 1 mile, turf, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool: $200,000

This year’s King Edward Stakes has the potential to be a classic, as several horses will arrive at Woodbine holding a major chance for victory.

Shirl’s Speight will be having his first start in five months. A classy operator, his last three starts have come in the very highest of company. Finishing fourth in the 2022 Woodbine Mile, he then ran well to finish second in the 2022 Breeders Cup Mile.

His next assignment came over in Meydan where he once again finished fourth – this time in the Group 1 Dubai Turf. Having been beaten by some classy performers, back in these calmer waters his connections will be hopeful of breaking his losing run.

Shirl’s Speight certainly won’t have things his own way. Treason heads into the race having recently won the 2023 Eclipse Stakes. Posting the best effort of his career that day, he would then just be denied a couple of weeks later in the 2023 Dominion Day Stakes. Clearly thriving, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him record another Woodbine success.

Mark Casse has enjoyed enormous success at Woodbine and runs Lucky Score in a bid to win thi race for a stunning fourth time in succession.

A gutsy winner of the 2023 Highlander Stakes, he could only finish third in the 2023 Connaught Cup last time out. Casse clearly knows how to ready one for this race and Lucky Score looks destined to play a major part in proceedings.

Finishing one place ahead of Lucky Score in the Connaught Cup was War Bomber. A graded winner back in 2022 when a winner of the Seagram Cup Stakes, his performance in the Connaught Cup last time out was his best effort in some time and he could be a player at a price.

The same can be said of Pao Alto and Town Cruise

Pao Alto made the move Stateside from his native France just under a year ago and is still looking for a first North American success. Placed efforts in the 2022 Artie Schiller Stakes and a narrow defeat last time out in the 2023 Prince George’s Country can’t rule him out, but he will need to find something extra if he is to come out on top.

Town Cruise is the oldest horse in the race but has won some huge races at Woodbine, including the 2021 Woodbine Mile. Whilst his best days may be behind him, he did win back in Allowance company last time out. Whilst a win in this race would be a shock, this old warrior’s chances can’t be dismissed.

Rounding out the field are The Minkster, Dancin in Da’nile, Conglomerate, Bode’s Tipsy and Haddassah – all are likely to start at double figure prices.

2023 King Edward Stakes Betting Pick

A brilliant race awaits with most of the field in with a serious chance of victory. Shirl’s Speight has the best form, but has questions to answer over his fitness. Treason has been in great recent form and could be the shrewd selection.

Bold Venture Stakes

Grade 3, 6 and a half furlongs, dirt, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool: $150,000

A fast and furious race awaits in this year’s renewal of the Bold Venture Stakes.

Likely to start the race near the top of the market is the Mark Casse trained Candy Overload. Winless in his last four, he last tasted success back in the 2022 Kennedy Stakes. Although he hasn’t been able to win, some of his recent performances have been credible, including a narrow defeat last time out in the Pink Lloyd Stakes and a second-place finish in this race last year. Hoping he will go one better this time around he looks a major contender.

Patches O’houlihan is thriving. A winner of five of his six career starts he warrants serious consideration. Whilst the bulk of his wins have come in lower graded races than this, his wins in the 2023 Lake Huron Stakes and 2023 Lake Superior Stakes have been mightily impressive. Whilst this race requires more, he could be the one they all need to beat.

Old Chestnut can’t quite boast the form of his rivals but at a decent price could represent some value. His third-place finish in the 2023 Jacques Cartier Stakes was followed by a fourth-place finish in the 2023 Highlander Stakes. He could certainly steal a placed finish.

Souper Watson has won three of his four 2023 starts and will be eyeing up the biggest prize of his career. His wins this year have all come back in Allowance company and he will be hoping to land a first graded prize. Top Woodbine jockey Kazushi Kimura takes the ride, and he looks to have a real chance.

At a larger price Flag of Honour could be a player. This will be his first American start following three wins back in his native Australia. Seemingly with speed to burn, he is well drawn in gate 2 and could be a contender if he can get off to a decent start.

County Fair was once considered a huge prospect and ran in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint. Despite those initial high hopes, things haven’t quite panned out the way his connections would have hoped. A regular at this level he hasn’t been able to pick up a graded prize, but he has shown glimpses. If a few fail to fire he could pick up the pieces.

Twelve months ago Secret Reserve enjoyed the biggest win of his career when he emerged victorious in last year’s renewal. Since then he has gone winless in his next six. Whilst there isn’t much hope for optimism, he clearly likes this race and could be another option at a bigger price.

Rounding out the field are Last American Exit, Border Town and Told it All.

2023 Bold Venture Stakes Betting Prediction

Another brilliant race is in store with several horses holding leading chances. Patches O’houlihan is an exciting prospect and will be hoping to continue his fine recent record. Although Candy Overload will be trying to stop him, Patches O’houlihan could just have a little too much class.
