Albany Stakes

Group 3, 6 furlongs, turf, open to two-year-old fillies. Total prize pool: £100,000

  1. Porta Fortuna +500
  2. Matrika +900
  3. Soprano +750

The Albany Stakes is often regarded as one of the most difficult races to predict of the entire Royal Ascot meeting and that certainly proved the case once again.

Seventeen of Europe’s most promising two-year-old fillies headed down to post for this year’s race with the betting led by the Simon & Ed Crisford trained Carla’s Way.

With a strong Irish contingent gathered for the race it was one of Ireland’s star young trainers Donnacha O’Brien that was able to train the winner.

Porta Fortuna arrived at the race having had two starts in strong company and that experience would prove vital as she found an extra gear deep inside the final furlong to overhaul longtime leader Matrika.

With the runners split into two groups, action was happening all over the track and a huge host of horses were in with a chance of victory.

Committing for home a long way out, the Aidan O’Brien trained Matrika looked like she wouldn’t be caught, but with the line in sight she showed signs of tiring, and it was the game Porta Fortuna who would go on take full advantage.

Matrika would hold on for second with Soprano rounding out the top three.
