2023 Kittens Joy Stakes & More Gulfstream Races Recap

Saturday’s action-packed card at Gulfstream Park was loaded with quality with four Grade 3 contests, The 2023 Kittens Joy Stakes, Claiborne Swale Stakes, Sweetest Chant Stakes, and the Forward Gal Stakes all being up for grabs.

In the Claiborne, the expectation would be that Super Chow would win a fourth consecutive race, but he would be denied by the Claude McGaughey-trained General Jim.

The 2023 Kittens Joy Stakes saw eight horses compete in this year’s renewal and it was Major Dude who bounced back in style to edge Candidate in a thrilling finish.

In the Sweetest Chant, we saw arguably the best finish of the day as Cairo Consort produced a stunning finish to go from last to first and net his first Graded Stakes victory.

The Forward Gal Stakes saw the top three horses in the market battle it down the home straight with Red Carpet Ready proving to be too good for Undervalued Asset and Atomically.

2023 Kittens Joy Stakes

Grade 3, one mile 1/16, Turf, open to horses aged three. Total prize pool: $175,000

  1. Major Dude
  2. Candidate
  3. Dude N Colorado

This year’s 2023 Kittens Joy Stakes was expected to be a battle between the two favorites in the market, Major Dude and Candidate.

Candidate was looking for his fourth consecutive victory but first at this level whilst Major Dude was looking to avenge his defeat to Candidate in the Dania Beach.

As the horses progressed through the race it was always clear that the two principles in the market would battle it out for the victory. It was Candidate who made the first move, but every step was tracked by Major Dude.

With Candidate unable to shake off the attentions of Major Dude, it was clear the writing was on the wall. Major Dude sidled up alongside at the half-furlong pole and quickly pulled clear. When in clear daylight, there was nothing going to stop him and he ran out a convincing winner of the race.

Candidate would hold on for second with Dude N Colorado finishing third.

Forward Gal Stakes

Grade 3, seven furlongs, Dirt, open to three-year-old fillies. Total prize pool: $175,000

  1. Red Carpet Ready
  2. Undervalued Asset
  3. Atomically

Nine horses lined up in this year’s Forward Gal Stakes with many looking for clues ahead of this season’s Kentucky Oaks.

One horse that has thrown her hat into the ring is Red Carpet Ready. Starting the race as the joint favorite she cemented her class and put her stamp on the field as the horses approached the home turn.

Holding a slender lead, jockey Luis Saez said go, and the response he got was instant. Opening up the jets, she soon put four lengths between herself and the rest of the field. Although Undervalued Asset tried to close the gap it was a case of too little too late as Red Carpet Ready would go on to win in convincing style.

Undervalued Asset was a clear second whilst Atomically rounded out the top three.

Keep an eye on all three as the season progresses as all will be hopeful of having a successful year.

Sweetest Chant Stakes

Grade 3, one mile 1/16, Turf, open to fillies aged three. Total prize pool: $175,000

  1. Cairo Consort
  2. Alpha Bella
  3. Heavenly Sunday

Arguably the best race of the day came in the Sweetest Chant Stakes. Nine horses took their chance in this year’s renewal but it was Cairo Consort and Heavenly Sunday who were the heavy favorites for the contest.

With many expecting the top two in the market to battle it out, the race was thrown into chaos when Cairo Consort completely missed the break and found herself six lengths back after the first 100 yards of the contest.

With plenty of time to claw the deficit back, Cairo Consort’s jockey Irad Ortiz took his time getting back into the race.

Whilst Cairo Consort was marooned at the back, it was the other favorite, Heavenly Sunday who was vying for the lead. Heading into the race unbeaten, many would have expected her to go on and claim victory.

Instead, the pace quickened, and those at the front end of affairs started to feel the pace. With both Heavenly Sunday and Alpha Bella starting to paddle, the eye was drawn to the back of the field where Cairo Consort was finishing like an express train.

With 100 yards to race, Cairo Consort was still to get on terms but with one last push by Ortiz, she got up in the shadows of the post to snatch a breathtaking victory. It was a classy ride from Ortiz who once again showed why he is regarded as one of the best jockeys in the world.

Alpha Bella would make it a 1-2 for trainer Todd Pletcher, with Heavenly Sunday experiencing her first loss as she finished third.

Claiborne Farm Swale Stakes

Grade 3, seven furlongs, Dirt, open to horses aged three. Total prize pool: $125,000

  1. General Jim
  2. Super Chow
  3. Two Of A Kind

Only five horses entered this year’s Farm Swale Stakes but there was no shortage of quality as Super Chow and General Jim started the race as the two heavy favorites.

Super Chow headed into the race looking to land his fourth race in succession but his first at this level.

For most of the race, it looked like Super Chow was going to achieve his aim. Able to dictate the pace of the race, he found himself at the front as the runners hit the final turn.

With Super Chow threatening to break loose, General Jim had to track his every move and as the horses rounded the home turn, he started to give chase.

With the race well and truly on, Super Chow found himself unable to get away and he started to tire. Sensing his opportunity Luis Saez on board General Jim, asked for more.

With Super Chow now treading water, General Jim struck the front inside the furlong pole and never looked back.

Despite finishing second, Super Chow ran a fantastic race and a win at this level certainly should be possible.

Two Of A Kind would go on to finish a distant third.
