Modern Games wins the 2023 Lockinge Stakes in fine style to fight off Chindit, who attempted to bite his rival as he was passed in the final furlong.
The Lockinge Stakes
Grade 1 (British Champions Series) – Purse $426,000 – 1 mile – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up
As the gates opened, Chindit broke smartly from his middle gate but he was soon joined and passed by Mutasaabeq on his inside and My Prospero on his outer.
Meanwhile, the chalk and eventual winner MODERN GAMES tracked the speed in mid-pack and was traveling strongly as they headed down to halfway.
As they went past halfway, the drifter in the betting Laurel had moved into second, tracking the strong pace set by Mutasaabeq. However, as they headed towards the final furlong, it was Chindit who quickly widened by two lengths, with Modern Games now in hot pursuit.
With just 50 yards to the wire, Modern Games quickened past the leader who turned his head right and tried to bite his foe, but it caused no issue for the Godolphin runner who sped clear to win comfortably.
Chindit held well for second, and you could throw a blanket over the next five for third with Berkshire Shadow closing late to take the show spot, with My Prospero in fourth.
This was the globetrotting Modern Games’ seventh career win and takes his total prize money earnings to $3.4 million dollars.
