2023 Long Island Stakes: R Calli Kim keeps it in the family

Repeats were the order of the day at Aqueduct on Sunday afternoon, with the slow-burning R Calli Kim emulating her half-sister’s victory of 12 months ago in the feature G3 2023 Long Island Stakes, and track favorite Big Everest posting back-to-back scores in the ungraded Artie Schiller.

Kim keeps it in the family

Sisters were doing it for themselves at Aqueduct on Sunday when R Calli Kim made her stakes breakthrough in the feature Long Island, a race won last year by her half-sister Temple City Terror. R Calli Kim came home a dominant winner, seeing off longshot Rhombique and Vergara.

The 6-5 favorite was completing a four-timer on her first start at Graded level and stepped up in some style. She was kept away from the pace by Jose Ortiz and needed a little daylight at the top of the lane, but as soon as she was in the clear she took off, inhaling the leaders and driving on to win going away by two and a half lengths. The 41-1 poke Rhombique rallied for the place a length and a quarter ahead of second-choice Vergara.

“She’s had a remarkable year,” said trainer Brendan Walsh, also the trainer of Temple City Terror. “We gave her plenty of time and she has exceeded all our expectations.”

R Calli Kim, a real late bloomer at the age of six, took her count to eight-for-13 with this breakthrough success and is expected to race on in 2024.

Everest peaks again

The Big A is the home sweet home for Big Everest, who stretched his unbeaten record at the NYC track to four when posting back-to-back wins in the Artie Schiller, outrunning the barnmates Exact Estimate and Masen.

Twelve months ago he led all the way to win by a half-length, but this time the 5-1 chance played a stalking role under Joel Rosario, sitting behind Masen until losing a couple of places on the far turn.

Big Everest was still full of running, though, and when Masen drifted out in the stretch he surged up the rail and into the lead, finding extra in the closing stages to get it done by three-quarters of a length, with the same margin between the board horses. The favoured Pioneering Spirit made no show in fourth.

“We didn’t want to get him into a speed duel,” said trainer Christophe Clement, regarding the change of tactics from last year. “He does not have to lead and it worked out well today.”

Big Everest now has four stakes wins on his resume and the gelding will be back for more next year, with a Graded-stakes breakthrough on the agenda.
