Mill Reef Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $123,000 – 6 furlongs – Turf – 2-Year-Olds

Array, trained by Andrew Balding was making his fifth career start and was securing his first graded stakes success, and there were strong morning line vibes as he was bet down as the 7/4 chalk.

This son of No Nay Never is bred for plenty of speed so it was a big positive to see him tough it out late as the first five were covered by just a length and a half.

He is a well-built colt and may be put away for the winter with the 2024 2000 Guineas at Newmarket his main target. His pedigree does not scream miler but today he showed he should get at least an extra furlong and will strengthen over the winter.

The race was a messy one but Oisin Murphy kept it straightforward, tracking the speed set by Haatem, and keeping his horse clear in the two lane.

The field bunched at the furlong pole but as his rivals were hitting traffic problems, Array widened by a length and held well to win by half a length at the wire.

Mister Sketch closed for second, with Seven Questions unlucky in third and Spanish Phoenix in fourth spot.
