2023 Mineshaft Stakes & Fair Ground Stakes Odds

Nine horses are set to head down to post for the 2023 Mineshaft Stakes, with Happy American looking to win a second successive graded contest following a narrow victory in the Grade 3 Louisiana Stakes just a few weeks ago. Several horses will be reopposing the Neil Pessin trained runner, including Mr Wireless who missed out on the Louisiana by just a neck.

In the Fair Ground Stakes eight horses have been declared with the most fascinating horse in the line up being the Kenny McPeek trained Tiz The Bomb. Tiz The Bomb is a former Grade 2 winner but will be having his first run for six months. Calvary Charge will try and win this race for the second consecutive year after recording a stunning gate to wire victory last year.

Mineshaft Stakes

Grade 3, 1 1/16 mile, Dirt, open to horses aged four and over. Total prize pool: $250,000

Three horses that lined up for the Grade 3 Louisiana Stakes a few weeks ago will renew their rivalries in this year’s Mineshaft Stakes.

A thrilling race, the Louisiana was won by a neck by Happy American who recorded his second successive victory and first at this level. Slow to get going, he gradually drifted into contention in the Louisiana before showing a nice change of gears to win narrowly by a neck. Although the margin of victory was small, it looked like he won with a bit up his sleeve and looked to be still full of running when crossing the line. He will likely start as the horse they will all need to beat.

It seems that wherever Happy American goes, Mr Wireless has followed with the Bret Calhoun trained runner losing out narrowly in both of his last starts. Both of his defeats to Happy American have been by slim margins but in the Louisiana he looked to be tiring whereas Happy American still looked full of running. They say that the third time is a charm but it looks like Mr Wireless will need to produce something special if he is to come out on top here.

Calhoun also saddles Run Classic who finished a distant fourth in the Louisiana. It’s now been three starts without a win and there might be more appealing options elsewhere.

Whenever Todd Pletcher saddles a runner, they should be respected and that certainly looks to be the case with Pioneer of Medina, who will be looking to bounce back following his second place finish in the Grade 3 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes. He ran a cracker that day but has now only won one race in his last seven starts. Highly tried, he has run some cracking races against the likes of Epicenter but he will need to produce a career best performance to come out on top here.

Two horses take the step back into calmer waters following defeats last time out in Grade 1 company. Arguably the most interesting horse in the field is the Dallas Stewart trained Hoist The Gold. A third place finish in the Malibu Stakes represents some really classy form and he will be a danger to all.

Respect must also be given to Tawny Port. Although he found the Pennsylvania Derby too hot to handle, he has still won two Grade 3 contests in his career and could be the value angle of the race.

This year’s Mineshaft Stakes looks set to be a classic. Happy American is likely to start the race as the favorite following his victory in the Louisiana, but is likely to face some stiff competition in the form of Mr Wireless, Hoist The Gold and Tawny Port. At a price it looks like Tawny Port could be a viable option. Twice a winner at this level, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he were to come out on top here.

Fair Grounds Stakes

Grade 3, 1 1/8 mile, Turf, open to horses aged four and over. Total prize pool: $150,000.

Eight horses will line up for this year’s renewal of the Fair Grounds Stakes with Tiz The Bomb making his return to the track following a six month injury layoff. A former Grade 1 winner, he has also tasted Grade 3 success and if fully tuned up is the classiest horse in the race. However there has to be a huge doubt over his fitness and he might be best watched on this occasion.

Calvary Charge returns to the scene of his biggest success after claiming a dramatic victory in last season’s contest. Similarly, to Tiz The Bomb, he turns up for this race having had six months off the track and is another who should be watched carefully.

One of the form horses headed into the week is Bay Street Money. He heads to Fair Grounds having won two of his last three starts, but is looking to make his mark at this level for the first time. He recovered from an eight-week layoff with a respectable third last time out and should be fully tuned up here.

Corelli is one of the oldest horses in the race but has raced at higher levels than this at various stages in his career. Plagued by injury, he returned from a mammoth 434-day layoff where he finished third in an Optional Claiming race. He could be one to back at a bigger price.

Gentle Soul was a winner last time out when he bagged a Stakes race at this venue last month. He is in flying form and has won four of his last five contests. He finished ahead of several horses who are lining up in this field with Two Emmys and English Tavern finishing second and fifth in the same contest. Gentle Soul has never won at this level but is clearly thriving and could be another interesting option at a bigger price.

A fascinating race awaits in this year’s Fair Ground Stakes as horses with lots of decent old form take on horses who are looking to win at this grade for the first time. The class horse is Tiz The Bomb and he will get the tentative vote here. A touch of faith will be needed for his backers but if fully tuned up he could have too much class for this field. One to keep an eye on at a bigger price could be Gentle Soul.
