2023 Monmouth Oaks Odds & Betting Picks

The 2023 Monmouth Oaks is for the classic generation of three-year-old fillies, and Todd Pletcher will be looking to extend his record to six wins after winning the race in 2004, 2006, 2011, 2016, and last year with Shahama. He’ll be looking for the filly Seduction to try and gain that sixth win.

But the filly on everybody’s lips is the chalk Occult who has been performing well in deeper waters recently.

Monmouth Oaks

Grade 3 – Purse $250,000 – 1 1/16 miles – Dirt – 3-Year-Old Fillies

The Chad Brown-trained Occult 3/1 is the early morning line chalk, and she has the highest recent Beyer speed figure here of 89 after she took a step forward in the 2023 Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park at the beginning of June.

That was a big step forward from her first try in graded stakes company which came in the 2023 Grade 3 Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct in April.

She has a wide gate to overcome but has enough speed to get across and take a stalking position, and she is strong over the mile and a sixteenth distance.

Seduction 8/1 is the Pletcher hope, and she is a lightly raced filly having broken the maiden tag on her second start under Luiz Saez at Gulfstream Park.

Her last run came in minor stakes company here at Monmouth Park earlier this month. She was behind a few of these that day, so will need a fair jolt of improvement to get involved. That was only her third career start so that is a definite possibility.

One of the biggest threats to the chalk comes in the shape of Foggy Night 4/1 who won the 2023 Grade 3 Delaware Oaks last time digging in gamely in the last sixteenth to widen late on.

She had previously tried her hand in graded stakes company when well beaten in 2022 Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes on the slop at Aqueduct but did not appreciate those conditions. Her profile is one of a progressive filly and she should have plenty more to offer.

The real interesting runner here is Vegas Magic 10/1 who was 3-3 on her first three starts, including when winning the 2022 Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar last August. She has since competed at the top table, finishing fourth in the 2022 Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and then being easily brushed aside in the 2022 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Her first run this season was in the Grade 2 Great Lady M at Los Alamitos where she finished sixth over the six and half furlong sprint trip. Add the stretch-out in distance and the class relief, and this filly should not be underestimated.

On current form, there is no doubt that Occult is a worthy chalk and will be a very tough foe to keep off the board, and her morning line odds of 3/1 look attractive.

But the interesting play across the board is VEGAS MAGIC, and she gets the vote to cause a bit of an upset with the class relief giving plenty of upside.

Both Foggy Night and the consistent Shidabhuti can be battling for a slice of the quarter-million-dollar pie.
