A free pass into the Breeders’ Cup is up for grabs in the G1 2023 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh, one of the highlights of Sunday’s stakes-heavy card, with the unbeaten Ylang Ylang setting the standard ahead of G2 winner Vespertilio and G3 scorers Fallen Angel and Porta Fortuna.

The Irish Champions Festival is always a way-station for the best two-year-olds in Aidan O’Brien’s barn, and he sends possibly his leading filly to the Moyglare Stud at the Curragh on Sunday, a race he has won a record nine times and a win-and-in for the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The horse in question is Ylang Ylang, unbeaten in two with a debut victory over course and distance under her belt, when she made all – unusual for an O’Brien debutante – for a comfortable score, with fellow debutante She’s Quality four and a half lengths back in third.

Ylang Ylang built sturdily on that next time when again going gate-to-wire in the 2023 G3 Silver Flash at Leopardstown over seven furlongs, easily putting away the tepid challenge of runner-up Vespertilio by a length and a half and leaving the impression there was plenty more in store. The fast ground holds no fears and she has yet to reach the limits of her comfort zone.

Vespertilio franked the form in style when landing the 2023 G2 Debutante over course and distance last time, a dominant score with Pearls And Rubies beaten five lengths into fifth but returning lame. She is progressive and should be right in the mix.

O’Brien’s second-string Brilliant was beaten a long way when runner-up to another barnmate in the 2023 G3 Newtownanner Stud here over a mile. She is well exposed, while O’Brien’s third wheel is the aforementioned Pearls And Rubies, who is clearly better than her last race suggests but is zero-for-three in stakes since winning on debut.

British raider Fallen Angel will be a major threat on the evidence of her romping victory in the 2023 G3 Sweet Solera at Newmarket over seven furlongs, when she came clear to win by three lengths with plenty in the tank. Her compatriot Ornellaia appreciated the mud when runner-up in the 2023 G2 Calvados at Deauville over seven furlongs and this faster ground may not suit.

Porta Fortuna showed sizzling speed in winning the six-furlong 2023 G3 Albany at Royal Ascot, and ran to a similar level when runner-up in the 2023 G1 Phoenix Stakes here over six furlongs against colts, giving up her unbeaten record when beaten four lengths but a clear second-best. It is not certain that she wants to stretch out, though.

The one-race maiden Red Viburnum was beaten by two heads when third on debut over course and distance when given a cautious ride, and the runner-up has won a G3 since. She is an intriguing wildcard from the barn that won this race last year.

Given the quality of her rivals she may be a slight underlay, but YLANG YLANG is a potential top-notcher and looks capable of extending her unbeaten run.
