2023 New Orleans Classic & Muniz Memorial Classic Recap

This past Saturday saw two superb races at the world-famous Fairgrounds racetrack in the form of the Muniz Memorial and the 2023 New Orleans Classic.

Both were Grade 2 contests that attracted plenty of attention from some of the very best racehorses in the world.

Kicking off the graded action was the Muniz Memorial where recent Pegasus World Cup Turf winner Atone was expected to back up his January win with another graded victory. However, racegoers were served an upset with Spooky Channel going on to win one of the biggest races of his career in taking fashion.

In the New Orleans Classic, it was another Pegasus World Cup Winner Art Collector who was expected to land the race, but once again favorite backers would end up being denied as West Will Power surged clear down the home straight to land the spoils.

Muniz Memorial Classic

Grade 2, Turf, One mile and an eighth, open to horses aged four and over. Total prize pool: $300,000

  1. Spooky Channel +450
  2. Rising Empire +2000
  3. Gentle Soul +500

Ahead of this year’s Muniz Memorial Stakes much of the pre-race previews centered around the Michael Maker-trained Atone who was making his first appearance since landing the Pegasus World Cup Turf back in January.

However, there would be a shock on the cards as Atone would run a desperately poor race to finish the race in last place.

Instead, the race would fall to Spooky Channel, trained out of the Jason Barkley yard, Spooky Channel started the race as the second favorite.

With the race being run at a moderate pace, all of the ten runners in the race found themselves with a live chance as the field rounded the home turn.

It was one of the outsiders of the field Rising Empire who made the first move. Trying to burst clear of the field, he held the lead at the furlong pole. With not much coming out of the chasing pack, the eye was drawn to the wide outside where Spooky Channel and Joel Rosario made their moves.

Gathering a head of steam, Spooky Channel bounded clear at the sixteenth pole and would go on to win the race by two lengths.

Rising Empire would complete a fantastic race by finishing second with Gentle Soul finishing in a distant third place.

2023 New Orleans Classic

Grade 2, Dirt, One mile and an eighth, open to horses aged four and over. Total prize pool: $500,000

  1. West Will Power +200
  2. Art Collector +160
  3. Mr Wireless +800

The Brad Cox trained West Will Power produced a career performance to land the 98th running of the New Orleans Classic.

Always at the head of affairs, West Will Power hit the home turn with a marginal lead but in just a few strides would end up putting the race to bed.

Accompanying West Will Power was jockey Flavian Prat and throughout the early proceedings of the race, it was clear that Prat was happy with how his mount was traveling.

With the home straight in sight, Prat asked for West Will Power to go and win the race and he duly responded.

Kicking off the home turn, it was clear that there was only going to be one winner. Despite the efforts of recent Pegasus World Cup winner Art Collector, West Will Power wouldn’t be for catching and would go on to win the race by four widening lengths.

Art Collector would finish in second place with Mr Wireless running a good race to bag third.
