2023 New York Stakes & Belmont Park Card Recap

On a Friday afternoon at Belmont Park dominated by distaffers, it was no surprise to see trainer Chad Brown lead the way with two G1 successes. Both were gained from the front, with Marketsegmentation claiming her first G1 in the 2023 New York Stakes and In Italian winning her fourth top-level contest in the Just A Game. Ky Oaks heroine Pretty Mischievous continued her rise to the top when a game winner of the G1 Acorn, Siskany was on the mark for Europe in the G2 Belmont Gold Cup, and Poppy Flower nailed her first Graded stakes with a buzzer-beating score in the G3 Intercontinental.

Market moves up for Brown

An easy lead made all the difference in the New York, the highlight of a sparkling Friday afternoon at Belmont Park, as Marketsegmentation did her own thing out front to claim her first G1 at the main expense of Didia and McKulick.

The most-fancied of Chad Brown’s quartet at 6-1, Marketsegmentation broke smartly under Jose Ortiz and was never threatened, keeping on strongly through the stretch to hold off the rallying Didia by three-quarters of a length.

The winner’s barnmate McKulick was nearest at the wire in third, a length and three-quarters further back, but odds-on favourite War Like Goddess was unsuited by the lack of speed and finished a disappointing sixth of seven. With The Moonlight was a late scratch.

“She relaxed very well on the lead and we were always comfortable,” said Ortiz, and the first two home may renew rivalry in the G1 Beverly D over a mile and three-sixteenths at Colonial Downs on August 12.

Acorn Stakes

G1, $500,000, 1m 1/16 dirt, 3yo fillies

Pretty looks so good again

Pretty Mischievous cemented her position at the top of the sophomore filly division with a hard-fought victory in the Acorn, getting the better of a duel with Dorth Vader with the longshot Occult taking the show spot.

The Kentucky Oaks winner was surprisingly only 9-5 second-choice behind the speed horse Munnys Gold, but the front-runner didn’t stay the distance and Pretty Mischievous certainly did, taking over at the eighth-pole and turning back the persistent Dorth Vader to win by a head. Occult came through from a long way back for third, four lengths adrift, while Munnys Gold faded to finish fourth.

“She’s developed into an amazing filly,” said jockey Tyler Gaffalione. “I don’t think we’ve seen the best of her yet.”

This was the second G1 victory for Pretty Mischievous, and trainer Brendan Walsh may now point her towards the G1 Coaching Club American Oaks over a mile-eighth at Saratoga on July 22.

Just A Game Stakes

G1, $500,000, 1m turf, 4yo+ females

Italian brilliant in any language

It looked easy on paper beforehand and that’s exactly how it turned out for In Italian, who strolled gate-to-wire to sign for her fourth G1 win in the Just A Game from Spendarella and Wakanaka.

The 1-5 favourite is a fearsome front-runner and when In Italian broke on top under Irad Ortiz it was game over in the Just A Game. She opened up in remorseless fashion through the stretch to hose her rivals by three and three-quarter lengths, with Spendarella racing second throughout and holding off Wakanaka by a length.

“She might be as good as any horse we’ve ever had,” said winning owner Peter Brant, and trainer Chad Brown indicated that In Italian will bid to extend her dominance in the G1 Diana over a mile-eighth at Saratoga on July 15, a race she won last year.

Siskany stays the course

A two-mile race on the lawn is always liable to go for export and Siskany struck a blow for the Europeans in the Belmont Gold Cup, making his stamina tell to see off The Grey Wizard and boxcar longshot British Royalty.

The 4-5 favourite – ridden by William Buick and trained by Charlie Appleby – became the sixth successive European winner of this race and got the dollars with something to spare, coming wide on the turn, surging to the lead a furlong out and rolling clear to win by two lengths. The Grey Wizard had enough in the tank to hold off rallying 59-1 shot British Royalty by a neck.

This may not be the last big prize Siskany puts in his travelling bag, as the five-year-old is expected to stay in the US this summer to target races at Saratoga.

Intercontinental Stakes

G3, $200,000, 6f turf, 4yo+ females

Flower in full bloom

The closest finish of the day came in the Intercontinental, when Poppy Flower made her Graded-stakes breakthrough by a nose from Bubble Rock and Amy C.

Bubble Rock had led from the get-go and was still ahead as the wire loomed, but Jose Ortiz had Poppy Flower flying down the outside and the 6-1 fourth-choice got up to seal the deal in the last jump. Amy C was three-quarters of a length back in third, a neck ahead of the favoured Bay Storm.

“She was rolling, she tried hard there,” said trainer Bill Mott. “She’s the sort of filly who shows up for work every time.”
