Heading into this year’s renewal of the Ohio Derby, all eyes were on the Larry Rivelli trained Two Phil’s. Looking to capture his second graded prize of 2023, he was hoping to regain the winning thread following his narrow second in the 2023 Kentucky Derby.

With all eight runners breaking cleanly, it was one of the outsiders of the field Henry Q who was happy to lead the field along.

The two main protagonists in the betting Two Phil’s and Bishops Bay were nicely tucked in behind in second and third, seemingly enjoying the perfect trip.

First to make their move was Bishops Bay but every step was tracked by Two Phil’s and jockey Corrales Gerardo.

With the pair hitting the home turn in front, it was Two Phil’s who was traveling best of all and he edged clear of his rival.

With Bishops Bay struggling to find a response, Two Phil’s had the race at his mercy and with no other dangers appearing, would go onto win by three easy lengths.

Bishops Bay was a comfortable second with Hayes Strike able to finish best of the rest in third.
