2023 Princess Margaret Stakes & Valiant Stakes Recap

The meet at Ascot contained two quality Grade 3 contests for the girls, in which Sacred Angel caused a shock at 16/1 on the board to take out her first graded stakes success at the first attempt in the 2023 Princess Margaret Stakes for two-year-old fillies, while Random Harvest fended off all challengers to win the 2023 Valiant Stakes in gutsy gate to wire style.

Sacred Angel goes gate to wire for first-stakes success.

This was a high-class field with Pretty Crystal bringing solid graded stakes form, and the likes of Symbology and Dazzling Star looking serious rivals based on their early efforts.

However, they were all put firmly in their place by the longshot SACRED ANGEL who bounced from the gates and proceeded to go gate to wire to win easily by three lengths.

She was a big 16/1 shot after what was a pretty low-key debut when third of seven at Pontefract Racecourse in June. However, she had taken a step forward to win next time when stepped up the class ladder in a Fillies Stakes race at Newmarket, closing strongly and widening to the wire

Saturday saw her show much more early speed and she led early from Symbology and the chalk Dazzling Star, but when Jason Hart urged his mount for more, she quickly widened by a length and a half at the three-sixteenths pole and was not for catching.

Pretty Crystal closed inside the final furlong but could not get to the leader, who went on to win by three lengths at the wire, with Symbology in the third spot and Dazzling Star weakening late to hold fourth.

The gutsy Random Harvest beats rivals away.

There was no doubt which horse had the best form coming into this race, and that was eventual winner RANDOM HARVEST who provided young jockey Saffie Osbourne with her very first graded stakes win and bagged her first graded stakes win in the process.

She had been plying her trade in much deeper waters recently and this class drop was clearly what was needed to get her back in the winner’s circle.

She jumped alertly from the gates and tracked the leader for a furlong before getting to her customary role on the speed, and from there she put up one of the most gutsy performances of her career.

She led at a sedate pace but as they entered the stretch, Osbourne asked her filly for more and she was quickly challenged by Ameynah who was brushed aside at the two-furlong pole.

Next up to challenge the leader was Thornbrook who found a seam on the rail but could not get past.

The final challenge came from Roman Mist who switched in the three lane under Oisin Murphy and closed late to the wire, but the winner held well to go and win by half a length, with Thornbrook in third spot, and Ameynah in fourth.
