Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

G1, 5.1m euro, 1m 4f turf (soft), 3yo+, 10.05am ET

The ‘Arc’ is Europe’s greatest race and its most valuable, and Sunday’s showpiece at Longchamp features runners from five countries – France, England, Ireland, Germany and Japan – and provides a golden ticket into the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf.

The local favorite is Ace Impact, unraced as a juvenile, unbeaten in five this year including the 2023 G1 Jockey-Club at Chantilly. He has had a low-key preparation, running below his best but still winning the 2023 G2 Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville, and the big query is the distance – he has never gone longer than a mile and five-sixteenths, and short runners do not win the Arc. His pedigree suggests he will stay further.

Continuous will stay no bother after winning the 2023 G1 St Leger over a mile-and-six at Doncaster, but the 15-day turnaround is a concern. He did not have to work too hard to win, though, and has improved with every race. If it turns into a slog on the sticky ground then he is better equipped than most.

German star Fantastic Moon beat compatriot Mr Hollywood with ease in the 2023 G1 Deutsches Derby at Hamburg, and was just as impressive in the 2023 G2 Niel over course and distance last time. His stamina won the day and he beat G1 course-and-distance winner Feed The Flame by an authoritative two and a half lengths – the issue here is the ground. Any more rain would affect his chance, while it would benefit Feed The Flame.

The best of British are Hukum and Westover, one-two in the 2023 G1 King George at Ascot over a mile and a half when only a head separated them after a gripping duel. The ground is fine for Hukum, a brother to mile champion Baaeed, but rain would be a negative for Westover, who was sixth in the Arc – Onesto tenth – on a quagmire 12 months ago. Both have race-winning credentials.

Frankie Dettori’s mount Free Wind lacks a touch of class but stays well, as does Simca Mille, who beat Sisfahan by three-quarters of a length in the 2023 G1 Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten and is a good outside bet to hit the board. Place Du Carrousel, on the other hand, has won over course and distance but appears better over ten furlongs. That goes too for Bay Bridge, whose victory over this distance at Kempton last time was in a weak G3.

Japanese mare Through Seven Seas was only a neck behind world leader Equinox when a longshot runner-up in a G1 at Hanshin, and that is top-class form. If the ground dried up it would enhance her chance considerably.
