2023 Prix de l’Opera Odds & Racing Predictions

A very cosmopolitan field lines up for the G1 Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp on Sunday, with leading contenders from Ireland (Jackie Oh and Lumiere Rock), Britain (Al Husn), Spain (Excellent Truth), Germany (Muskoka) and the home nation, led by Jannah Rose and Blue Rose Cen. Here the 2023 Prix de l’Opera Odds & Racing Predictions.

At this time of year fillies can bloom or regress at random, and there are examples of major players going both ways in the Opera at Longchamp on Sunday, a win-and-in for the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

One going the right way is Lumiere Rock, who broke a long losing run with a clear career-best in the ten-furlong 2023 G2 Blandford at the Curragh. The fitting of first-time cheekpieces may have helped and she was far superior, leading at the quarter-pole and drawing off to beat the rallying Jackie Oh by three lengths. The third horse was G1-placed next time.

Easy ground is important to Jackie Oh, who has improved for stretching out. She found trouble in running at the Curragh and could be better than the bare form.

On her previous start Lumiere Rock was beaten a head after trying to go gate-to-wire in the 2023 G2 Alec Head at Deauville over ten furlongs. She was caught close home by Jannah Rose , who is four-for-five and had earlier won the 2023 G1 Saint-Alary over course and distance, with Crown Princesse three-quarters of a length back in third. Jannah Rose has had a fairly light campaign and there could be plenty left in the tank.

Blue Rose Cen looked a champion after winning two G1s in the first half of the year, notably the 2023 Diane at Chantilly over an extended ten furlongs when Jannah Rose was sixth. Her last two starts have been unimpressive, though, and although she was going longer in the 2023 G1 Vermeille here it was not only the distance that beat her. A tough season may be taking a toll.

Cutting back may not be the best option for Darkaniya, who impressed over a mile and a half when taking a G2 at Baden-Baden, or for Muskoka, who needed every yard of the 11 furlongs to get home in the 2023 G1 German Oaks at Dusseldorf.

British hope Al Husn won the ten-furlong 2023 G1 Nassau at Goodwood on terrible ground (Blue Rose Cen fourth), but then blew out over a mile and a half on a fast surface at York. She has her preferred conditions here and it would be no surprise if she is on the board, whereas compatriot Rogue Millennium, runner-up in the 2023 G1 Matron at Leopardstown over a mile, may not appreciate the extra yardage.

It was a career-best for Spanish filly Excellent Truth last time, getting up late to grab the ten-furlong 2023 G3 Psyche at Deauville by a neck, but more is needed now.
