2023 Rodeo Drive Stakes: Didia dit it again

Age trumped youth at Santa Anita on Saturday, when the five-year-old Didia produced an irresistible stretch run to take the scalp of three-year-old star Anisette in the G2 2023 Rodeo Drive Stakes.

Didia did it again

The powerful Argentine mare Didia took her record in the US to an impressive five-for-six when justifying favouritism in the 2023 Rodeo Drive at Santa Anita on Saturday, turning back Anisette and Juncture in style to earn a free pass into the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

The second-choice Anisette brought recent G1-winning form to the table but the tote board preferred Didia, and the even-money shot sat in behind the pace of Turnerloose before moving up around the turn. She got first run on Anisette and that was the ballgame, Didia maintaining her advantage through the stretch to get home by a length and three-quarters, with Anisette holding off the rallying Juncture for the place by a neck.

“After a long break you never know, but she was really good today,” said jockey Vincent Cheminaud. “I’ve never ridden at the Breeders’ Cup before and I’m really excited!”

Didia won two G1s in her native Argentina before shipping north, and was runner-up in the 2023 G1 New York at Belmont Park in June on her previous start. Her trainer Ignacio Correas has been successful before at the Breeders’ Cup, taking the 2019 BC Distaff with Blue Prize.
