Petulante on upward trend

A rising star made his mark in the Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park on Saturday, when Petulante completed a hat-trick on his stakes debut with a gutsy defeat of Nimitz Class and Trademark.

The second-choice Nimitz Class went for home at the top of the lane, but Luis Saez was galvanizing Petulante and the 9-5 favorite ran down the leader in mid-stretch before turning back his persistent threat to win by a half-length, with Trademark rallying from the rear to take third, two lengths further back.

Catnip is simply irresistible

Another to sign for a three-timer was Catnip, who made his stakes breakthrough in the Monmouth when coming fast and late to spring a surprise over Never Explain and Speaking Scout.

The 6-1 fifth-choice of six stalked the pace early under Joel Rosario, got shuffled back around the turn but then produced a dazzling surge to come over the top in the closing stages, nailing Never Explain by a half-length with the one-paced Speaking Scout a length further back in third. The favorite Tribhuvan set the fractions until fading into fourth.

“He had time off at the start of this year and we gelded him,” said trainer Michael Stidham. “It focused his mind and he’s unbeaten as a gelding.”

Spending takes the money

Chad Brown took two shots at the Eatontown and hit the bullseye with his second-string Consumer Spending, who caused a mild upset when outrunning Surprisingly and Vergara.

Vergara set dawdling fractions all the way around and the lack of speed produced a blanket finish, with 9-2 fourth-choice Consumer Spending finding a change of gear under Samy Camacho to lead at the sixteenth-pole and drive on to win by three-quarters of a length, with the favored Surprisingly a head in front of the game Vergara. Brown’s first-string Gina Romantica was a close-up fourth.
