Breeders Cup Odds

Supporting the San Clemente is the Osunitas Stakes, a race for one-mile specialists, Honey Pants for Phil D’Amato could be the one they all need to beat.

San Clemente Stakes

Grade 2, 1 mile, Turf, open to fillies aged three. Total prize pool: $200,000

The 2023 San Clemente Stakes looks set to be a highly competitive as a field of fourteen will head down to post. One of the heavy favorites for the contest looks set to be the Leonard Powell trained Anisette.

Originally bred and raced in the UK, she was a winner before moving to the US. Making her debut in Santa Anita back in May, her US debut ended in a stunning victory where she picked several rivals off from the back of the field. Finishing with plenty of running left, she will hope to remain undefeated since making the move Stateside.

Looking to make an impression will be Delight from the Jonathan Thomas barn. She arrives at the race having just had one run which saw her run out a cozy winner back in Allowance company. A winner of the 2022 Jessamine Stakes, she could be one of the most popular selections of the race.

Phil D’Amato will have high hopes with his runners Comanche Country and Paris Secret.

Comanche Country was a winner of three consecutive races back in 2022 but she has found life tougher since and is now winless in her last four starts. Those starts have come in competitive company which included a seventh-place finish in the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Back in slightly calmer waters, her connections will be hopeful of a big showing.

Paris Secret has only raced four times but has two wins to her name. Gradually improving with each run, she finished third in the 2023 Honeymoon Stakes which was her best result to date. With further improvement on the cards she could be a player at a decent price.

Justique has two consecutive third place finishes from her last two starts which both came in Grade 3 contests. Still lightly raced, she has found life in graded company tough, but will be hoping to produce a career best performance.

The most interesting horse and one to potentially back at a price could be the Peter Millar trained And Tell Me Noiles. A winner of three of her first four starts, she is now winless in her last five starts but has arguably some of the best form in the book. She finished second in the 2023 Santa Anita Stakes before finishing well down the field in the 2023 Ky Oaks. With Miller looking for improvement this will be her first turf start.

Another horse to keep an eye on will be Spicybug. A winner of her last two starts, this will be her first start in graded company. Clearly thriving, she could be another option at a decent price.

2023 San Clemente Stakes Odds & Betting Pick

Anisette looks like an exciting horse and the nature of her US debut victory would suggest that there could be plenty more to come here. Comanche Country has some big race experience and could be an attractive option at a bigger price.

Osunitas Stakes

1 mile, Dirt, open to fillies and mares aged three and over. Total prize pool: $200,000

Another highly competitive field are set to head down to post for this year’s Osunitas Stakes. Honey Pants for Phil D’Amato looks set to be one of the most popular horses in this year’s contest.

Highly tried, she heads into the race following a second-place finish in the 2023 Mizdirection Stakes. Yet to win at this level, that form is competitive, and she is bound to give her running once again.

Canoodling is winless in her last four starts but is a former graded winner who must be respected. Her win in the 2022 Megahertz Stakes is amongst the best form on offer and she looks to be a real contender here.

Warrens Candy Girl enjoyed a productive 2022 at Del Mar which ended with success in the 2022 Solana Beach Stakes. This year, life has been tougher as she has only been able to win one of her four starts. She heads into the race after a disappointing fifth place finish in the Fran’s Valentine Stakes and will be hopeful of a better performance this time around.

Very Scary has been a prolific winner in Allowance company but has always seemed to find one or two who are just a bit too good in Stakes and graded company. Yet to win at this level, she may have her work cut out for her once again.

Mike McCarthy has a fine record in these races and looks to have a great chance with Nevisian Sunrise. Set to have her first run of the year, this will be her first run for her new trainer. Yet to win at this level, McCarthy knows how to ready one for the big day and she could be an option at a price.

McCarthy will also saddle Symphony Perfect. A winner last time out, she has been beaten by several reopposing rivals and doesn’t look like one for the shortlist.

Awake At Midnyte has raced in some of America’s biggest races, against some of the best horses but hasn’t quite been able to leave her mark. Now winless in seven, she could be capable of victory here but will require a leap of faith.

2023 Osunitas Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

A muddling affair awaits in this year’s Osunitas Stakes with a whole host of horses capable of victory. Warrens Candy Girl has a strong record around Del Mar and could be a major contender. Honey Pants will also head into the race on the back of some positive showings and is another for the shortlist.
