2023 San Felipe Stakes & Buena Vista Stakes Odds and Picks

Old rivals Closing Remarks and Quatroelle set to face off in the Buena Vista Stakes at Santa Anita, with the score balanced nicely at 2-2 so far, while National Treasure aims to book his place in the upcoming Kentucky Derby this May 6th at Churchill Downs by claiming the 2023 San Felipe Stakes

Buena Vista Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $200,000 – 1 mile – Turf – 4-Year-Old and Up – Fillies & Mares

Eight fillies and mares go to post here over the mile turf track and we have to kick off with two old rivals, Closing Remarks, and Quatroelle.

Closing Remarks (7/2) is a very consistent mare and has hit the board in eleven of her sixteen races, including three wins. She was a length behind Quatroelle last time in the Grade 3 Megahertz Stakes here at Santa Anita and was closing all the way to the wire.

Quatroelle (3/1) is another highly consistent sort and has hit the board in each of her last five races. She was behind Closing Remarks two back here at Santa Anita in the Grade 3 Bobby Frankel Stakes and it is clear these two are very closely matched.

Another fancied runner today, and the likely chalk is School Dance (4/1 current odds). She was behind the two previously mentioned foes last time but had previously racked up a hat trick of wins before just failing to win the Grade 1 American Oaks here at Santa Anita just two starts ago. She is a very progressive filly and may have more improvement than her two older foes.

Macadamia, Tik Tok Famous, and Annaghlasa look outclassed here but the other two runners Kitty Kitana (4/1) and Nadette (6/1) hold chances.

Of those two, we like the chances of Nadette. She was well held behind Closing Remarks and Quatroelle last time, but that run came off a layoff and she is sure to be much sharper this time around.

No getting away from the chances of both Closing Remarks and Quatroelle and both should be battling for a share of this lucrative purse.

However, there are a couple of younger rivals here who are on the up, and it’s SCHOOL DANCE that gets the vote to improve past her older rivals.

Nadette can also take a step forward and holds a strong chance underneath and looks one for exotics.

San Felipe Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $400,000 – 1 1/16 miles – Dirt- 3-Year-Olds

A strong-looking field here for these Kentucky Derby hopefuls, and this one is due off at 5.27 pm ET for this mile and a sixteenth test on the dirt track.

He was beaten here last time, but that came after a layoff and he has put in some bullet drills recently.

One of the horses fancied to give him a run is Practical Move (4/1) who failed to win at maiden level but broke the maiden tag when stepping up the class ladder to win the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity last time at Los Alamitos racecourse. He has hit the board on all five starts, and has to be respected.

Another well-fancied runner here from the Tim Yakteen barn is Hejazi (7/2). He was three and a half lengths behind National Treasure in the Grade 1 American Pharoah but has since come out first time this year to break the maiden tag at the fourth attempt.

Of the others, the first-time maiden winner Geaux Rocket Ride (5/1) ridden by Flavien Prat and Fort Bragg (8/1) who ran well behind Practical Move last time have chances.

Of the longshots, then Genius Jimmy (20/1) is an improving type who could outrun his odds and might be one for exotics players

Of the barn buddies Practical Move and Hejazi, then Hejazi gets the vote and should hit the board.

Geaux Rocket Ride is taking a huge step up the class ladder, but is highly thought of and can be involved in the finish.
