2023 San Juan Capistrano Stakes: Planetario wins

Sunday’s card at Santa Anita was headlined by the marathon G3 2023 San Juan Capistrano Stakes.

Only six horses lined up for this year’s renewal with the Mike McCarthy trained Offlee Naughty starting as the heavy favorite following his victory in the 2023 San Luis Rey Stakes just a month ago.

The horse he beat that day was the Richard Mandella trained Planetario. Aiming to take his revenge here, Planetario achieved exactly that and was able to win his first race since moving stateside, devastating the rest of the field in the final furlong.

With this 2023 San Juan Capistrano Stakes considered a wide-open affair it was one of the outsiders of the field Opry who was happy to take up the early running. Galloping into an early four length lead, race favorite Offlee Naughty and jockey Umberto Rispoli were more than happy to keep an eye on proceedings from the back of the pack.

With the rest of the field happy to let Opry dictate the fractions, the order of the pack remained largely unchanged for much of the contest.

The shape of the race would change as the runners hit the home turn.

With Opry struggling, Birth of Cool took his place at the front of affairs, he was hotly pursued by Planetario and Offlee Naughty who was trying to make some ground from the back of the pack.

With the runners strewn all over the track it was Planetario who was able to surge to the front and he set sail for home. With nothing but clear daylight in front of him, Planetario hit the furling pole with a two-length lead and stretched further and further clear.

With nothing coming from the back of the pack, Planetario was able to win his first race since moving to America by four easy lengths.

With the race on for second, Offlee Naughty, who had met traffic problems when trying to make his charge was able to just pip Rimprotector who had to settle for third.
