2023 Santa Ysabel Stakes Odds & San Simeon Picks

Just six runners are due to head to the Santa Anita gate at 1.27 pm ET for the G3 2023 Santa Ysabel Stakes a competitive Road to the Kentucky Oaks field and we have some classy fillies to look at.

Santa Ysabel Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $100,000 – 1 1/16 miles – Dirt – 3-Year-Old Fillies

The Bob Baffert-trained Faiza looks to maintain her 100% record and make it four wins from four career starts and win back-to-back Grade 3 stakes races.

We have to start with the likely chalk Faiza and this filly has been impressive winning all three starts to date. She broke her maiden tag the first time and was pitched right up the class ladder next time to win the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos Racecourse. That was followed by another graded success in the Grade 3 Las Virgenes at Santa Anita, both of those battling wins.

The horse that has finished runner-up to her on both of those starts is Pride Of The Nile, and she is definitely going to enjoy going the extra sixteenth of a mile today. There is not a lot of speed here and Faiza may be the one to go forward from her outside gate. That should suit Pride Of The Nile and it’s another classic race in prospect between these two.

Justique was in third spot in that last race and rallied well to get within two and a half lengths. She is another who will enjoy the extra sixteenth and has already won two of her four starts. Her other run came in the Grade 2 Chandelier Stakes here at Santa Anita and that is also a solid piece of form.

Blessed Touch has already been beaten by both Justique and Faiza and will need to take a big step forward if she is to trouble the leading contenders here.

Peter Miller pitches And Tell Me No Lies in here off a layoff and this one should not be underestimated after racking up a hat-trick of wins last year, including The Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and the Grade 2 Chandelier. Her last run as a two-year-old came in the Breeders Cup where she was well held, but recent drills show her in good nick and she’ll be a leading player here.

Spanning The Globe looks to have a very tough assignment here and will be a very big price on the boards.

A very tough race to call and Faiza and And Tell Me No Lies have the best form on the card. These two could well go head to head on the speed and both should be hitting the board if at the top of their game.

However, there is a feeling that PRIDE OF THE NILE still has more to offer, and if getting a good pace to stalk, can strike late to take this.

Don’t discount Justique who has a strong chance to grab a spot underneath.

San Simeon Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $100,000 – 6 ½ furlongs – Downhill Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Brickyard Ride looks to make it 3 wins from his last three attempts on the unique Santa Anita turf course over 6 ½ furlongs.

Brickyard Ride loves this unique course and should be putting in a strong effort to win yet again over this six-and-a-half furlong sprint trip. He won the Grade 3 Kona Gold here at Santa Anita back in April and now comes back to his favorite hunting ground. The negative this time around is the nearly ten-month layoff, so we have to wait and see.

Sumter is an interesting contender. He just failed to go gate to wire over a mile last time in the Grade 2 Mathis Mile where he led until 100 yards from the line. He has had one try on the downhill course here but was a disappointing tenth of twelve. That experience will have helped and he would be a live contender if getting on the speed.

Count of Amazonia and Motorious have both been running well and have solid form over this track, but whether they quite have the class is debatable.

Whatmakessammyrun is the class horse in this field and has a strong record over these 6 ½ furlongs. He gets some nice class relief today after being beaten in Grade 2 company last time. He was a winner of the Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes here at Santa Anita in October when he stalked the speed and pounced at the top of the stretch and held well for the win.

Respect The Code, Anarchist, and Mecklenburg all look to have work to do here and the best they can hope for is a slot underneath.

Brickyard Ride has the ten-month layoff to overcome, but he has won off the bench previously and he has produced some sparkling recent drills and will attempt to go gate to wire and should hit the board here.

If we are looking for a bit of value then the pick has to be SUMTER. He was only picked up late over a mile last time and this intermediate six-and-a-half furlong trip looks ideal. It looks like he and Brickyard Ride will battle for the speed.

Whatmakessammyrun will be in the stalking position behind the speed and undoubtedly has a favorite’s chance.
