2023 Sprint Cup & Chairman's Trophy Odds and Picks

Lucky Sweynesse looks to put the boot into Wellington once again as the pair renew their fierce rivalry in the G2 2023 Sprint Cup at Sha Tin racecourse.

Sprint Cup

Grade 2 – Purse $637,000 – 1200 meters (6 furlongs) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Upwards

We have a small field for the Sprint Cup and all eyes will fall once again on Lucky Sweynesse who beat old rival Wellington comfortably last time by more than four lengths. That run in the Queens Silver Jubilee Cup was his second Grade 1 success on the trot and he is taking a big drop down the class ladder today.

Wellington has been one of the best sprinters in Hong Kong for a number of years, and although beaten by the above rival last time, they went very slowly through the opening quarter which would not have suited the Gibson-trained runner.

He is much better judged on his win in the Longines Hong Kong Sprint when he closed late. He had Lucky Sweynesse, Courier Wonder, and Cordyceps Six behind that day, and a strong pace would play to his strengths.

There should be a better pace set up, with Whizz Kid sure to be the one to get on the pace early.

Courier Wonder was only just behind Wellington last time in that slow-run race and will do well to turn the form around. He is winless in his last eleven races with the last win coming in 2021.

Master Eight and Rewarding Together are regular foes in these sprints but neither looks good enough to pose any problems to the top two in the betting.

This race is tough to predict as it will come down to tactics and Lucky Sweynesse looks impossible to keep off the board and should put in a strong effort.

The narrow vote goes to WELLINGTON, who was inconvenienced by the slow pace last time and should get a good speed to aim at with Whizz Kid looking to go gate to wire.

The third spot should be fought out between Courier Wonder and Cordyceps Six

Chairman’s Trophy

Grade 2 – Purse $637,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Turf – 4 Year-Olds

Leading sprinter California Spangle stretches back out to a mile and looks to dazzle in the Chairman’s Trophy at Sha Tin racecourse.

This race looks at the mercy of the chalk California Spangle who only found the top-class Lucky Sweynesse too good last time, and he is well clear on the official ratings for this race.

He was behind another mighty sprinter/miler in Golden Sixty last time in The Stewards Cup but had registered his first Grade 1 success three back when taking the Longines Hong Kong Mile, and it’s important to point out that he has never been off the board in sixteen career starts.

Waikuku has already been well beaten by the chalk, but one that could make a race of it is Tourbillon Diamond who was well held in the Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup last time but had previously run fourth in The Longines Hong Kong Cup when closing late from last to finish fourth in a bunch finish for the underneath slices.

Running Glory has been in strong form and has not been off the board in his last four starts. He is taking a big step up the class ladder, and his only previous attempt against graded stakes foes came three back when he was runner-up in the Grade 3 Centenary Vase Handicap. He’ll do well to beat the likes of California Spangle and Tourbillon Diamond.

Columbus County is one of the longshots that could be of interest. He broke the maiden tag first time back in 2020 which is still his only career success in nineteen tries, but he has since competed in graded company and has put in some solid efforts during that time.

He was a good fourth behind Tourbillon Diamond in the Grade 3 Premier Plate Handicap three back and had also run a fine fourth in the Hong Kong Vase over a mile and a half back in 2021. He is probably a little outclassed but will be a late closer here and could run into the money.

Beauty Joy was beaten over five lengths by California Spangle in the Longines Hong Kong Mile in December, while Money Catcher may be one to try and take on the chalk on the front end, but at best will be playing for a slice underneath.

This race should set up well for Tourbillon Diamond and he is the one that is most likely to give the chalk the most to do and looks to hold a solid chance of hitting the board.

Never out of the first three in all career starts and now taking a class drop, the vote goes to CALIFORNIA SPANGLE to come out on top and he should win this comfortably.

The others should be fighting for a slice underneath only and Beauty Joy and Columbus County could be two to include in exotics.
