2023 Steve Sexton Mile Stakes: Frosted Grace Wins

Frosted Grace overcomes traffic problems to run down the chalk Touchuponastar in the final furlong to take out the $400,000 2023 Steve Sexton Mile Stakes at Lone Star Park.

Grade 3 – Purse $400,000 – 1 Mile – Dirt – 3-Year-Olds and Up

Right from the gates opening, Touchuponastar was clearly going to try and get on the speed but he was pushed out as the inside gate runners Mine That Star and Holden The Lute both got inside at the clubhouse turn and they were one-two down the start of the backstretch with the chalk posted out in the three lane.

As they got to the end of the backstretch, Touchuponastar nosed to the lead but he was still three wide in doing so, and in behind, the eventual winner FROSTED GRACE was all wrapped up in a pocket with nowhere to go.

As they hit the top of the short stretch, Touchuponastar had fended off Mine That Star and Holden The Lute and widened by two lengths under driving from Thornton but Christian Torres had now found a gap and peeled into the four-lane to give chase on Frosted Grace.

He grabbed the chalk at the furlong pole and widened to win by a length and a half at the wire.

KokoKomo ran an extraordinary race. He was fifteen lengths off the speed on the far turn but rallied and closed strongly to take the third spot and nearly grabbed second right on the wire. He is one to watch next time.

Sonneman closed late for the fourth spot.

Hayes Strike lived up to his name by producing a power-packed late close, to grab Harlocap and Eyeing Clover in the shadows of the wire to strike in The Texas Derby by a nose.

From the gates, it was Ghost Power and the second favorite Eyeing Clover who went into the clubhouse turn neck and neck, with Caballo Feliz and Harlocap stalking the strong pace set by the two leaders.

As the field made the backstretch run, the leader slowed the pace and the field bunched up with just seven lengths from front to back.

At this point, the eventual winner HAYES STRIKE was anchored near last under Christian Torres.

As they entered the far turn, the leader Ghost Hero was set down for a drive and he widened by a length from Eyeing Clover and this burst of speed from the leader saw the field suddenly under pressure.

As they hit the top of the short stretch Ghost Hero was challenged by Eyeing Clover and Harlocap and these three set down for the drive to the wire. Ghost Hero was first to back out and it looked like a two-way go between Eyeing Clover and Harlocap with just a sixteenth to go but Torres who was way back on Hayes Strike was now in the clear and closing fast.

What an exciting finish as Harlocap edged ahead of Eyeing Clover, only for Hayes Strike to come over the top and win by a nose right on the wire.

Ghost Hero held well for the fourth spot.
