2023 Sussex Stakes Odds & Betting Picks

Wednesday sees the first race this season where the classic three-year-old generation comes up against the older horses over the mile in the G1 2023 Sussex Stakes, and the horse that will get all the cameras flashing and the experts talking is Paddington from the Aidan O’Brien barn, as he goes to try and make it seven straight wins.

We have 6 runners going to post and the monster that is Paddington is the odds on chalk to notch win seven on the bounce. He was last seen when coming up against elders for the first time in the 2023 Grade 1 Coral Eclipse where he dispatched the top class mare Emily Upjohn, and it is going to take a pretty extraordinary performance to stop him, especially as he receives a weight allowance of4lbs from the filly Inspiral, and 7lbs from the older colts.

He also beat the 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean in the 2023 Grade 1 St James Palace Stakes two back at Royal Ascot, and handler O’Brien was recently quoted as saying

“It’s very hard to compare him with other horses we have had, and I am not sure we have ever had a horse that has made that improvement in the way he is doing it, mentally, physically, and confidence-wise. He just looks so natural”

And when the master of Ballydoyle speaks, it is worth listening.

But is this a one-horse race?

The filly Inspiral is the nearest challenger in the betting and she is 120 compared to Paddington on 125, so her task is a difficult one, to say the least. She was second in the 2023 Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on her seasonal debut after an eight-month layoff, so is entitled to take a big step forward. She’ll be mid-pack and likely following the chalk and will try and pounce late.

The two that could be battling for a slice underneath are Aldaary and the quirky but talented Chindit

Aldaary was a winner last season when taking the 2022 Listed Spring Trophy Stakes at Haydock in May. That was his only run of the season and he clearly runs well fresh. His last run was a second in the 2023 Grade 2 Summer Mile Stakes when a beaten chalk.

He has plenty of ability but giving weight to Paddington and Inspiral presents him with a tough assignment.

Chindit is rated 115 so has plenty to find with the two favorites, however, this small field should play to his strengths and he did win the 2023 Listed Paradise Stakes on seasonal debut before a fine second behind Modern Games next time.

He was five lengths adrift of Inspiral in the 2023 Grade 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot so needs a jolt of improvement to mount a serious challenge.

With the field cutting up at the final declaration stage, it makes it a two-horse race and Inspiral looks sure to at least make a race of it with Paddington.

The other four runners do not pose a threat to Aiden O’Brien’s runner and PADDINGTON gets a strong vote to win his seventh race on the trot.

Both Aldaary and Chindit should be fighting it out for the third spot.
