2023 Swale Stakes, Kitten Joy, Sweetest Chant Odds & Preview

Following last week’s Pegasus World Cup, top class racing action returns to Gulfstream Park this Saturday. Saturday’s card is headlined by three top quality Grade 3 races, The Swale Stakes, Kitten Joy Stakes and Sweetest Chant Stakes and all look like they could be fascinating races.

In the Swale Stakes, Super Chow will be looking to win his fourth stakes race in a row and will likely start as the favorite for the contest. Eight horses have been declared for this year’s Kitten Joy Stakes with Candidate looking to take the step up to Graded Stakes company in his stride.

The Sweetest Chant Stakes looks like one of the most competitive races of the day with nine horses set to take their chance in this year’s renewal. Malleymoo will be having only her second start in the States following a brief but successive stint in Ireland and could be one to watch with real interest.

Claiborne Farm Swale Stakes

Grade 3, seven furlongs, Dirt, open to horses aged three. Total prize pool: $125,000

Six horses will head down to post for this year’s Swale Stakes and the race certainly looks to be wide open.

Bound to be a popular selection will be Super Chow. A winner of five of his first six starts, he will be looking for a fourth successive victory, but first at this level.

A strong front runner, jockey Chantel Sutherland will look to grab the early lead. Drawn on the outside, look for Super Chow to track his way from out wide and bag the inside rail. A speed ball of a horse, all five of his wins have come over 6 furlongs, but his last win in the Limehouse Stakes suggested that the step up to seven furlongs should suit.

General Jim has won twice in five career starts and will look to land the biggest race of his career this Saturday. Whilst he could only finish fourth last time out in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at the start of the year, he was badly hampered that day and still finished just over a length behind the winner. With a cleaner run, he could certainly play a part in proceedings.

Two of a Kind will represent the Brian Lynch yard and looks to take on Super Chow once again after finishing behind him in the Limehouse Stakes. A distant third that day, that was his first run after a seven-month layoff and his connections will hope he would have blown the cobwebs away. A winner of two of his three career starts, he arrives at Gulfstream with a strong chance.

Juan Alvarado sends out Keanu and he will be hoping his mount can take his career win tally to two. His win last time out was done in game fashion and he came from nicely off the pace to narrowly prevail. Whilst more will be needed for a victory here, he can certainly bag the spoils.

Aaraj could be the most interesting horse in the contest. Pitched into this race after just one career start, he could be a horse capable of anything. His maiden win came in heavy conditions, but he was still able to show a great turn of foot to streak away from the rest of the field. He could be one of the best value plays of the race.

King Sparrow rounds out the field and he heads to Gulfstream following a win last time out in a Tampa claiming race.

This looks like one of the more competitive races with plenty of horses looking like they have a great chance of victory. Super Chow has been impressive in his career so far – winning five of his six starts and if able to bag the inside rail, he has to be considered the likeliest to win. Two of a Kind should give Super Chow plenty to think about and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him run a big race.

Kitten’s Joy Stakes

Grade 3, one mile 1/16, Turf, open to horses aged three. Total prize pool: $175,000

Eight horses will head down to post for this year’s Kitten’s Joy Stakes. The betting is likely to be led by the Arnaud Delacour trained Candidate who after three unbeaten starts on turf is looking to land his first Graded Stakes contest.

The excellent Tyler Gaffalione will take the ride and will hope to spark up a winning connection once again, having rode Candidate to victory just a few weeks ago.

Everything fell into place last time out in the Dania Beach Stakes with Gaffalione and Candidate able to grab the inside rail and control the pace of the contest. Showing a strong turn of foot off the final bend, Candidate was able to find enough to complete an impressive gate to wire win, and his connections will be hopeful of a similar result this weekend.

In the Dania Beach, Candidate was able to thwart the heavy favorite Major Dude and the Todd Pletcher trained horse will be hoping to exact revenge this time around. Perhaps caught out by Candidate’s stamina, Irad Ortiz left his charge too late last time and will be mindful of not giving Candidate too big a lead this time around. He finished looking like he had a lot left in his legs and will be hopeful of turning that form around here.

Congruent is another who finished behind Candidate last time out. Having been placed behind both Candidate and Major Dude it looks like he has plenty to find if he is to reverse that form. The same can be said of Souzak who could only muster a fifth-place finish in the same race.

As well as saddling Major Dude, Todd Pletcher will send out Dude N Colorado. An authoritative gate to wire winner last time out on the Gulfstream all-weather track, Pletcher will be hoping his charge can translate that form to the turf course.

Mark Casse sends two into the contest with both Lights of Broadway and Boppy O looking to make an impression. Lights of Broadway is a winner of two of his last four starts and after a ten week layoff was able to finish second in the Pulpit Stakes hinting that could be plenty more to come here.

Boppy O will likely be an outsider for the contest. He has been off track since October and could only finish ninth in his last race. He might be best watched here.

This year’s Kitten’s Joy looks to be another closely fought contest. Whilst Candidate’s form can’t be ignored, the play at the prices could be Major Dude. His performance last time out is probably a race that his connections would like back and if Irad Ortiz can judge the pace better, he must be in with a real shout for success.

Sweetest Chant Stakes

Grade 3, one mile 1/16, Turf, open to fillies aged three. Total prize pool: $175,000

Nine horses will head to post for this year’s Sweetest Chant with a lot of the pre-race focus bound to be on the Jack Sisterton trained Malleymoo.

Kentucky bred, Malleymoo was originally trained out of the Joseph O’Brien yard in Ireland where she made a successful debut, winning a fourteen runner maiden cozily at Dundalk.

Her victory in Ireland saw her move Stateside where she has had one run in the Wait a While Stakes. Despite her second-place finish, the run was full of promise considering she badly missed the break at the start. Her closing speed was impressive and if she can get away on better terms, she looks to have a great chance of opening up her American account.

Stephanie’s Charm is another who competed in the Wait a While, where she finished in third just one place behind Malleymoo. Much like Malleymoo, she was doing all her best work towards the finish and finished full of running. If Jose Ortiz can judge the pace of the race better she looks to have every chance of reversing the form.

Todd Pletcher has a busy day on Saturday and has two more horses entered into this contest. Luis Saez will take the mount of Alpha Bella and she heads into the race following her first career victory in a special weight maiden. Her first start on grass, she routed the field that day and Pletcher will be hoping there will be more plenty more to come.

Irad Ortiz will take the ride of Cairo Consort who was a first time out winner for Pletcher in the Ginger Brew Stakes. She finished a neck ahead of the reopposing Stephanie’s Charm and had to use all her ability to finish in front. One of the favourites for this contest, she hinted that there could be more to come, and she should be one to watch with real interest.

In a race where position could be key, Sweetlou’sgotlaces has bagged the inside rail. A winner of the Tepin Mile Stakes over at Aqueduct last time out, her trainer Raymond Handel will be hoping she can convert her New York form to the Floridian grass.

Whilst Malleymoo looks a live danger to all in the field, Cairo Consort’s win in the Ginger Brew was done a tad more cozily than it looked and she could be the one to be on here. Stephanie’s Charm has finished behind both Malleymoo and Cairo Consort in each of her last two starts but has gone down fighting. At a price she could be the value play of the race.
