2023 Wonder Again Stakes: Prerequisite Struck Gold

Upsets were the order of the day at Belmont Park on Sunday, with the headline G2 2023 Wonder Again Stakes going to 7-1 shot Prerequisite, the outsider of Chad Brown’s three contenders. There had been a bigger shock earlier in the afternoon when 12-1 chance L Street Lady led home a trifecta of longshots in the ungraded Jersey Girl. Both races had been carried over when Thursday’s action was cancelled owing to poor air quality.

Prerequisite steps right up

No surprise that Chad Brown trained the winner of the Wonder Again, the feature at Belmont Park on Sunday. Quite a surprise that it was Prerequisite who came out on top, seeing off Be Your Best and the favourite Revalita to make a successful stakes debut.

Brown – posting a record-extending fifth win in the Wonder Again – had three in the gate and Prerequisite was the least-fancied at 7-1 off a solitary maiden win, but she graduated in style when getting away fast under Flavien Prat and going gate-to-wire.

She opened up daylight at the top of the lane and that was crucial, as Be Your Best rallied hard through the final furlong but Prerequisite stayed one jump ahead, getting home by a neck with her barnmate Revalita coming along for third, a length further back. Brown’s other runner Venencia finished last of the seven.

“I hustled her out of the gate and she got really brave,” said Prat. “Every time a horse came to her she dug in, showing more distance would be fine for her.”

That could be the next move for Prerequisite, who earned an invitation to the G1 Belmont Oaks over ten furlongs on July 8 with this success.

Lady beats the odds

There was a total boilover in the five-runner Jersey Girl when longshots filled the board, 12-1 L Street Lady beating 17-1 Unified Alliance and 26-1 Wildhawk to send chalk players searching for painkillers.

G1 winner Chocolate Gelato was 4-5 favourite and Aunt Becca an even-money play, but they finished second-last and last as tote-board chaos reigned. L Street Lady went back-to-front under Manny Franco, coming with a sustained run through the stretch to lead inside the last sixteenth and score by a length from Unified Alliance, with early pace-setter Wildhawk weakening into third, two and a half lengths further back.

“I was told to just make one run,” said Franco. “They came back to me and we ran them down, she got it done nicely.”

L Street Lady, three-for-six lifetime for trainer Brittany Russell, was winning at stakes level for the second time after breaking through at Laurel Park in January.
