2023 Zuma Beach Stakes & Surfer Girl Stakes Recap

Two Grade 3 contests helped shape Santa Anita’s Sunday card with the renewals of the 2023 Zuma Beach and Surfer Girl Stakes.

First to hit the track was the Zuma Beach Stakes, where Endlessly backed up his performance in the 2023 Del Mar Juvenile Turf to win his second successive graded contest in convincing fashion.

Completing the graded action was the Surfer Girl Stakes. In what was a competitive race, it was Dreamfyre who won her second Grade 3 prize of the year when she bravely held off the challenge of Buttercream Babe to win by half a length.

Endlessly kept his unbeaten record intact following an impressive victory in this year’s Zuma Beach Stakes.

Arriving at the race following his victory in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf, he stamped his class inside the final furlong to win the race by several lengths.

Mike McCarthy had three horses in the race with Endlessly being his strongest fancy – however, it was his other two runners that put in the hard yards in at the start of the race with Ngannou and Formidable Man happy to pull the field along.

Endlessly and jockey Juan Hernandez were happy to bide their time and finally made their move as they approached the home turn.

Quickly eating into the lead, Endlessly found himself perfectly placed up the inside rail and primed to make a charge.

With Ngannou still leading. Endlessly breezed past at the furlong pole and set sail for home. Doing his best work late, he would go onto win by five lengths. Ngannou would complete a 1-2 finish for McCarthy with Grand Mo the First finishing back in third.

Dreamfyre kept her unbeaten record intact as she ran out as the gutsy winner of the Surfer Girl Stakes.

Heading into the contest fresh off the back of winning the 2023 Sorrento Stakes, this was her second successive Grade 3 victory – but she needed to do it the hard way!

Happy to lead the field through the early stages, it looked like her challenge would fade as she hit the home turn with only a slender lead.

With a whole host of horses surrounding her, it looked like she would be swallowed up by the pack, but to her credit she dug in and found plenty.

The main challenge was laid down by Buttercream Babe. Despite drawing alongside Dreamfyre on several occasions, she didn’t quite have the speed or class to sneak ahead.

On the wide outside was Flattery who also had dreams of keeping her unbeaten record alive. Despite both horses trying to lay down the gauntlet, Dreamfyre plugged on bravely to the line to ensure that it would be she who would grab the crucial victory.
