Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

G1, $2m, 1m 2f turf, 3yo+ females, Santa Anita, November 4

In the last 11 years, the Filly & Mare Turf has either gone for export or been won by Chad Brown, so it makes sense for bettors to concentrate on those two areas.

Aidan O’Brien won it last year and bids for a repeat with Warm Heart (+350), who has improved considerably in her last two starts when winning the 2023 G1 Yorkshire Oaks and the 2023 G1 Vermeille at Longchamp, in the latter serving it up to Blue Rose Cen (+1000) and Above The Curve (+4000) in fifth and sixth.

Those two victories were over a mile and a half, but O’Brien won last year’s race over a mile and three-sixteenths with a confirmed 12-furlong horse and the likely fast ground will suit Warm Heart.

Ten-furlong specialist Nashwa (+500), fourth in the 2022 F&M Turf, has also been in career-best order of late and was beaten just a half-length when third behind Auguste Rodin in the 2023 G1 Irish Champion at Leopardstown, impeccable form. She also goes well on fast ground although she can get behind early in her races, a potential negative with Santa Anita’s relatively short stretch.

Her barnmate Emily Upjohn (+1000) may run in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe or at Ascot before any Breeders’ Cup plans are made, while another barnmate Inspiral (+1000) and Irish filly Tahiyra (+500) would run in the BC Mile if they were to make the trip. Dual G1 winner Mqse De Sevigne (+1200) is being pointed towards Ascot in October, and the filly she beat in the 2023 Jean Romanet at Deauville, Via Sistina (+1200), is likely to be retired after one more run in Europe.

Over to you, Chad Brown. His front-running mare In Italian (+1200) was beaten a length in this race 12 months ago and has added two more G1 wins in 2023, while barnmate Whitebeam (+1100) beat In Italian by a nose in the 2023 G1 Diana at Saratoga and is two-for-two in the US, with obvious scope to move up again.

The distance could stretch them both, but another barnmate McKulick (+1800) is seasoned over further and won the 12-furlong G2 Glens Falls at Saratoga from the tremendous veteran War Like Goddess (+1000), who surely does not have the pace to cut back in such a high-octane contest.

The 2023 G1 Del Mar Oaks winner Anisette (+1700) is three-for-three Stateside and the distance should suit; Evvie Jets (+1200) is coming off a career-best victory in the 2023 G2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga over a mile-sixteenth, when she beat Fluffy Socks (+2000) by a head; and Elusive Princess (+1700) impressed on her US debut when taking the 2023 G3 Saratoga Oaks over a mile and three-sixteenths.

2023 BC Filly & Mare Turf Early Prediction

This is probably one for the Europeans, with specialist ten-furlong filly Nashwa given a slight edge over the three-year-old Warm Heart.
