Bed o’ Roses Stakes Odds, Field & Predictions

Five very talented distaffers make the G2 Bed o’ Roses Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday a must-see contest, with the Eclipse Award winner Goodnight Olive bidding to erase the memory of a bad-trip defeat last time and G2/G3 winners Wicked Halo, Caramel Swirl and Dr B forming strong opposition to the champ.

There are only five runners in the Bed o’ Roses Stakes, the feature at Belmont Park on Saturday, but pound-for-pound it’s a proper heavyweight contest and proof that a short field isn’t always short on intrigue and excitement.

Everyone knows how good Goodnight Olive is – last year’s champion female sprinter, three G1s in a seven-for-nine count including at the Breeders’ Cup – and she was very unlucky in defeat in the G1 Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs last month, her first loss at today’s seven-furlong distance.

She suffered a desperate trip, and it wasn’t Irad Ortiz’s finest hour, with no daylight to deliver a challenge all the way down the stretch before finishing an eased-down third, a length behind ridden-out runner-up Wicked Halo, who was largely responsible for keeping Goodnight Olive in close quarters.

Given a clear run she would almost certainly have finished ahead of Wicked Halo, as she did by three and a half lengths in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, and even though Wicked Halo is very talented in her own right with three G2 wins on her resume, in a straight and fair fight Goodnight Olive can be expected to come out on top.

That controversial contest was won by Godolphin filly Matareya, and Godolphin have another major player in the shape of Caramel Swirl, who has started only four times since the beginning of 2022 and comes along in top order after victory in the G3 Vagrancy here over six and a half furlongs.

She was strong against lesser opposition, wrapped up late but still a comfortable two and a half lengths clear of the favoured Dr B, who lost position around the turn but rallied from way back. Caramel Swirl was put in her place by Goodnight Olive when they filled the exacta in the seven-furlong G1 Ballerina at Saratoga in August, two and three-quarter lengths apart, so she has work to do, but her barn is in flying form and she is improving with maturity.

Dr B was coming off a five-month layoff since a career-best when wiring the field in the G3 Go For Wand over a mile at Aqueduct, romping by four and a quarter lengths. Perhaps she needed the Vagrancy to put an edge on her.

Recent course winner Beguine has never won at stakes level, although she tore an allowance field apart here over six furlongs – gate-to-wire by nine and a quarter lengths – and is worth another try up in class, but the extra yardage isn’t guaranteed to suit and she has shown her best with Lasix (runs clean here).

If champion sprint mare GOODNIGHT OLIVE had found a gap last time then this conversation would be much simpler. She can put the record straight now.
