Beholder Mile 2023: A Mo Reay 1st success at the highest level

There were plenty of ‘firsts’ to celebrate at Santa Anita over the weekend, with both Ballet Dancing (G3 Santa Ana) and Spirit Of Makena (G3 San Carlos) making their stakes breakthrough with impressive victories.

The weekend’s feature, the G1 Beholder Mile 2023, was won in thrilling fashion by A Mo Reay, for whom it was a first success at the highest level.

Santa Ana Stakes

G3, $100,000, 1m 2f turf, 4yo+ females, Sunday

Ballet is on point: A step up in distance proved the key for Ballet Dancing, who made her stakes breakthrough in the Santa Ana at Santa Anita on Sunday, cruising clear of Queen Ofthe Temple and Duvet Day for a dominant success.

It was the filly’s first start at ten furlongs and the difference was dramatic, with Ballet Dancing, trained by Simon Callaghan and ridden by Flavien Prat, stalking the pace set by Annaghlasa before taking over on the turn and quickly going clear.

The 9-2 third-choice had nothing to fear in the stretch, coming home three and a half lengths ahead of Queen Ofthe Temple, who rallied into second by a head from the fast-finishing Duvet Day. Something went amiss with the favourite Australia Mia, who dropped right out and walked off the track.

Beholder Mile Stakes

G1, $500,000, 1m dirt, 4yo+ females, Saturday

Reay of sunshine: In a thrilling finish to the Beholder Mile, the feature event at Santa Anita on Saturday, A Mo Reay outgamed the hot favourite Fun To Dream to stretch her winning streak to three and sign for her first win at the highest level.

Fun To Dream opened up clear water at the top of the lane but A Mo Reay, trained by Brad Cox and partnered by Flavien Prat, never stopped coming and got up to grab the dollars right on the line, the 7-1 third-choice winning by a head. There were two and a quarter lengths back to Midnight Memories, barnmate of the runner-up, in third.

G3, $200,000, 7f dirt, 4yo+, Saturday

Makena shows right spirit: It has been a steep learning curve for Spirit Of Makena who, at the age of five on just his fourth start, made a successful stakes debut when outrunning the strongly fancied pair Forbidden Kingdom and Get Her Number in the San Carlos.

Joe Bravo sent the 5-2 third-choice, trained by George Papaprodromou, past the trailblazing Forbidden Kingdom at the three-sixteenths pole and the race was quickly over, with Spirit Of Makena pulling a length and a half clear at the wire. Forbidden Kingdom had a length and a quarter to spare over the rallying favourite Get Her Number.
