Belmont Stakes 2023: Arcangelo Wins the Third Jewel

Today’s G1 Belmont Stakes was one for the record books, as Jena Antonucci crashed through one of the many glass ceilings in racing to become the first woman to train the winner of a Triple Crown race. Arcangelo was the horse who delivered the goods at Belmont Park, the grey beating last year’s champion juvenile colt Forte and his barnmate Tapit Trice for a landmark success.

Antonucci and Arcangelo make history together

History was made at Belmont Park this afternoon when Jena Antonucci became the first woman to train the winner of a Triple Crown race, her stable star Arcangelo overcoming his lack of big-race experience and the stamina-sapping demands of the Test Of Champions to land the Belmont Stakes at odds of 7-1 from barnmates Forte and Tapit Trice.

The victory was also a personal triumph for jockey Javier Castellano, who won his first Belmont just as five weeks earlier he had claimed his first Kentucky Derby aboard Mage.

In the 155th edition of the final leg of the Triple Crown, Preakness winner National Treasure set the fractions just as he had at Pimlico three weeks ago, but he wasn’t allowed to dawdle his way around this time and in the end he had nothing left for the stretch run.

Arcangelo was always well placed behind the speed and got a dream run up the fence as the field circled the turn, travelling smoothly under a chilly Castellano, and he took command at the top of the lane. From there he was always in control and opened up daylight through mid-stretch.

That was the decisive move, and even though the posse closed through the final furlong they were never close enough to threaten his advantage. Arcangelo hit the wire a length and a half clear of the rallying favourite Forte, who beat out Tapit Trice for the place spot by a nose. The second-choice Angel Of Empire dead-heated for fourth with Hit Show.

“I don’t know that I have words right now,” said Antonucci, 47, who trained her first winner in 2010. “He’s got the heart of a champion. He’s just amazing and I’m just so grateful.

“It goes to show you must never give up. If you can’t find a seat at the table, make your own table. Build your team and never give up. Just keep working your butt off.”

Arcangelo, a son of the mighty Arrogate, took three starts to break his maiden and only made his stakes breakthrough on his last start in the G3 Peter Pan. This is the fifth year running that each leg of the Triple Crown has been won by a different horse, and the winning time was more than five seconds slower than the almost unbreakable record of 2:24 flat set by the legendary Secretariat 50 years ago this week.
