The Breeders’ Cup is finally here and one of the most exciting races of the entire meeting is the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Futurebook.
A Grade 1 contest open to two-year-old fillies and mares, the action will take place on the turf and will be raced over 5 and a half furlongs. Twelve horses will head to post for this year’s renewal, and connections of the entrants will be hoping to steal the crown away from Wesley Ward who has won this race for the last three years. Here is everything you need to know.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint
Grade 1, turf, open to horses aged two and over. Total prize pool – $1,000,000
Wesley Ward is the man that the rest of the field will be hoping to beat. Long established as one of the best trainers of speedsters, Ward has a great chance of landing this race for the fourth successive year and saddles the very exciting Love Reigns.
Ward hasn’t been shy about the abilities of Love Reigns and has previously called his charge the fastest horse in the world. She was disappointing when she could only finish in fourth at Royal Ascot, but returned to form with a victory at Saratoga and should be primed for this contest. It wouldn’t be a surprise if she was to start the race as the favorite.
This race has been targeted by several foreign raiders and at the time of writing four horses from the UK will be hoping to take this prize back to British shores.
Mischief Magic for Charlie Appleby and William Buick are one of the most likely dangers. A winner of three of his five career starts, he is a winner at Group 3 level before finishing a respectable fourth last time out in the Group 1 Juddmonte International. A solid performer at six furlongs he should have the stamina to last home, but whether he can contend with the speed remains to be seen.
Frankie Dettori loves nothing more than a Breeders’ Cup victory and the enigmatic Italian takes the ride of Persian Force. A winner in Group 2 company, he has hit the crossbar in his last three Group 1 contests. A bruiser of a horse, improvement is still on the cards, and he could be a player at a price.
Karl Burke and Richard Fahy round off the British challenge and Dramatised and The Platinum Queen can be considered as live contenders.
The Platinum Queen brings fantastic form into the race following her victory in the Group 1 Prix de Abbaye. Operating at a career-high level, she will be hoping to build on that performance and land jockey Hollie Doyle her first Breeders’ Cup success.
Bob Baffert and Chad Brown will be desperate to land this contest, and both arrive at the race with strong outside chances.
Speed Boat Beach represents Baffert, and he heads into the contest unbeaten following two easy wins. Although those wins have come in much calmer waters, there will be an expectation that he will be able to take the step up in class in his stride.
Chad Brown is the most premier turf trainer based in the US and he will be hoping that Oxymore can add to his impressive resume. A winner of two of his three career starts, he disappointed last time out but could be a solid long-shot option if he can return to form.
It would be foolish to dismiss the chances of Private Creed who will represent the Steve Asmussen yard. A winner of his last two starts, Private Creed will be hoping to land a blow, but he will need a career-best performance if he is to make the final shakeup.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Betting Pick
This year’s Juvenile Turf Sprint has the makings of being one of the most fantastic races of the entire meeting. Much will be settled at the start and if Love Reigns can break cleanly, she could take some pegging back. However, we will take a chance on The Platinum Queen who will be hoping to build on her impressive Group 1 victory in France last time out. She showed great desire and has the speed to burn which will certainly make her tough to beat here.
