Busher Invitational Odds, Field & Betting Picks

There are 50 Road to the Kentucky Oaks points on offer to the winner of the Busher Invitational at Aqueduct, basically guaranteeing a spot in the Kentucky Oaks, but this is a disappointing turnout despite the presence of some promising fillies.

Ungraded, $200,000, 1m dirt, 3yo fillies, 2.20pm ET

It may be worth putting most faith in the big-name trainers, with Brad Cox represented by the Juddmonte homebred Capella, who is unbeaten in two starts on the synthetic strip at Turfway Park. Last time she led just about every step of the way and toughed it out to win a mile allowance optional claimer by a neck, and her pedigree suggests she may be capable of a lot better.

Chad Brown’s pair are unbeaten, with Shidabhuti two-for-two after winning an AOC over course and distance in January, pushing clear to score by two lengths from the one-paced La Vita Sofia, who had earlier failed to come up to the mark in two attempts at stakes level at this track.

There’s obviously more to come from Shidabhuti, as there is from her barnmate Asset Purchase, who really caught the eye when romping on debut here over six and a half furlongs in January, clearing right away to win by eight lengths and beating a better-fancied, more experienced barnmate into third. This is the logical next step and she wouldn’t need to find much more to be a big presence today.

Another Big A debut winner is Ziaerati, who was just as impressive over seven furlongs when drawing right off to beat a field of more experienced rivals by eight and a quarter lengths. It’s hard to accurately weigh up what she achieved, but there’s clearly ability there and she deserves a chance at stakes level.

Three-race maiden Check Engine Light is perhaps a little unlucky not to have broken through yet, having been strongly fancied on her last two starts and beaten only a nose over course and distance when outbattled through the final sixteenth. She shouldn’t be ignored against this field of winners, especially as the quality may indeed not be that high, but she might need an easier spot to get off the mark.

One final point to make is that all six fillies ran on Lasix last time out, and are medication-free today. That’s just another variable to stir into the pot in a race that isn’t one to get too heavily involved in.
