California Cup Derby 2023

Stakes – Purse $200,000 – 1 1/16 miles – Dirt – 3-Year-Old Colts & Geldings

Thirsty John defeats barn buddy Giver Not A Taker in the California Cup Derby 2023 by making every post a winning one and going gate-to-wire to give trainer Peter Miller a 1-2.

Seven went to the gate for this trial for the Kentucky Derby, and it was trainer Peter Miller who held all the aces with the first two on the Boards.

Giver Not A Taker was the favorite at 8/5 ahead of his barn buddy and eventual winner THIRSTY JOHN who was sent off at 2/1.

As the gates opened, both jockeys (Hernandez and Prat) were intent on getting on the speed, but with inside rail position, it was Thirsty John who claimed that honor.

Amigo GA was off slow and as they entered the clubhouse turn, was already 8 lengths off the speed.

As they headed down the backstretch it was Thirsty John by a half, while Passarando had made ground to stalk the leaders just in behind, while Crypto Ride had made a move in the 3 paths and was tracking the two leaders out wide.

The quarter went in 23.2 secs and they flashed past the half-mile in just over 47 seconds.

Hernandez said to go on the leader as they exited the backstretch and went a length clear. At this point, Crypto Ride started to back out of things, while Passarando was three lengths back and under a drive.

As they hit the top of the stretch, Thirsty John widened by a couple of lengths, but Prat galvanized the favorite and was gaining all the way to the wire.

He was a game second, while Passarando closed gamely and was beaten less than 3 lengths at the wire, while Crypto Ride held tough for the fourth spot.

California Cup Oaks

Stakes – Purse $200,000 – 1 mile – Turf – 3-Year-Old Fillies

Grazed My Heart does just that to the chalk Sell The Dream, as she gets upright on the wire to win a humdinger for the California Cup Oaks at Santa Anita Park on Saturday.

We expected an exciting race, with some lovely fillies showing off their skills, but what transpired was an absolute classic.

As the gates opened and they headed to the clubhouse turn, there were four across the track, with Cholly, Loyal To A Fault, Sell The Dream, and Cast Member battling for the early speed, and it was the chalk Sell The Dream who won that battle and set off down the backstretch stalked by her main market rival Cast Member.

They went an opening quarter in 23.3 secs with the half-mile going in 47 and change.

As they headed down the backstretch, the eventual winner GRAZED MY HEART was in the last spot, on the fence, and around 7 lengths from the front.

As they headed out of the back, the front pair got a break on the field and looked like fighting it out, meanwhile Grazed My Heart had passed one rival but was still eight lengths off the speed.

It was here that Cholly started to back out of things, and the front two set down for the stretch drive.

Hector Berrios, who had ridden a patient race on the eventual winner, found a seam down the inside rail and moved quickly into third.

With a sixteenth to go, it was still Sell The Dream and Cast Member, but Berrios galvanized his filly for a final effort and she nailed the two long-time leaders right on the wire.

The long-odds outsider Golden Again closed late for the fourth spot.
