Canada Day Racing Festival Recap

The first graded action of the day at Woodbine came in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes, and it was a great start for favorite backers as Turf King for Chad Brown cemented his potential class to win the first graded prize of his career. Here the 2023 Canada Day Racing Festival Recap, Check out the winners and payouts.

Next on track was the Grade 3 Selene Stakes where Mark Casse added yet another graded Woodbine prize, but it wasn’t with the favorite Wonder Wheel, but his second-string Solo Album who was able to pull off the upset at a big price.

The first Grade 2 race of the card came in the 2023 Highlander Stakes. On a night of upsets, it was another Mark Casse long shot who was able to get their head in front with Lucky Score recovering from a poor start to land the race at another double figure price.

Josie Carroll was strong handed in this year’s Dominion Day Stakes but in another race that conformed to the pattern of the night, it was her second-string Tyson who was able to get the better of his much more heavily fancied stablemate Treason.

The graded action rounded off with the Grade 2 Nassau Stakes where Mark Casse was able to celebrate a trio of victories with his charge Fev Rover able to hold off Canada’s current horse of the year Moira in a narrow finish.

  1. Turf King +200
  2. Kaukokaipuu +400
  3. Midnight Rising +800

Winning time: 1:43.41

Turf King produced a brilliant performance under top Woodbine jockey Kazushi Kimura to land this year’s Marine Stakes. Slowly away, Kimura was happy to position Turf King in the middle of the pack and wait for the gaps to appear.

As the field rounded the home turn it was the heavily fancied Kaukokaipuu who made his move, swooping to the front from way out wide. Keen to not let his rival steal a march, Kimura found a seam up the inside rail and set off in pursuit.

With the pair miles clear of the field, it was Midnight Rising who finished best of the rest to capture third place.

  1. Solo Album +1500
  2. Honor D Lady +350

Winning time: 1:42.65

Solo Album for Mark Casse was able to win her second race in succession and with it the biggest prize of her career when proving a dominant winner of this year’s Selene Stakes.

Having been drawn in the widest gate, the start was always going to be crucial and under jockey Sahin Civaci that’s exactly what Solo Album got.

Able to race up with the front rank, Civaci was happy to position Solo Album four off the front. With some ground to make up, Civaci asked Solo Album to make her move just shy of the home turn. Showing a great burst of speed she powered to the front and wouldn’t see another horse for the rest of the race.

With the rest of the field caught on the backfoot, Solo Album found herself streaking for home with a four-length lead. Honor D Lady had a shocking first half of the race but responded impressively to take second with Tito’s Calling holding on for third.

Race favorite Wonder Wheel ran poorly and could only finish back in eighth.

Sahin Civaci and Mark Casse were able to make it a quickfire graded double as they were able to claim victory in this year’s Highlander Stakes.

Despite a poor start that saw Lucky Score several lengths behind those at the head of affairs, Civaci never panicked and steadily worked Lucky Score into the contest.

In what was one of the best rides of the night, Lucky Score was always traveling sweetly but caught behind a wall of horses needed some luck in running. With horses starting to tire, Civaci was able to take full advantage of the gaps in front of him. Switching from the middle to the inside, Lucky Score didn’t get her head in front until the shadows of the post.

Oceanic looked like she would take the win, but with Lucky Score able to find something extra she would be denied by half a length.

In a bunched finish, race favorite One Timer was able to claim third.

Josie Carroll arrived at this year’s Dominion Day Stakes with three runners and saddled the favorite Treason who was looking to land his second successive graded prize following his victory in the 2023 Eclipse Stakes.

Despite being considered as one of the bankers of the evening, it wouldn’t be Treason’s day, with this year’s Dominion Day crown landing to his stablemate Tyson.

In what was a fiercely contested race, Tyson and Treason were able to hit the front coming off the home turn and surged clear of the rest of the field.

With neither giving an inch, the race was up for grabs, but it was Tyson who was able to land the knockout blow to win the race by a length. In just his fourth career start he could be one to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

  1. Fev Rover +400
  2. Moira +200
  3. Millie Girl +1000

Winning time: 1:40.03

The headline of Saturday’s card was the Nassau Stakes where Mark Casse was able to top off a fantastic day with his third win of the evening.

Having moved to the States last year, Fev Rover was able to win her first graded contest in America and was able to do so comfortably.

Ridden by Woodbine master Patrick Husbands, Fev Rover was always up there travelling with the pace and as the field hit the home straight was travelling like the best horse in the race.

With Husbands patiently waiting for the gaps, eventually they appeared and Husbands and Fev Rover made no mistake in taking advantage.

Bursting clear in the final furlong there would be no response from the rest of the field, and she would go onto win by three widening lengths.

Moira, who placed fifth in the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf was the favorite heading into the race but could only finish in a distant second.

2Moira $2.50$2.10
3Millie Girl  $3.10
