Canadian International Stakes & E. P. Taylor Stakes Odds

The Kevin Attard-trained Moira will be looking to go one better in the 2023 E.P. Taylor Stakes after failing by a neck last year, while in the Grade 1 Canadian International Stakes, we’ll see the short-priced chalk Nation’s Pride looking to enhance an excellent Canadian record for Charlie Appleby.

Race fans are also treated to a fantastic Grade 2 sprint with theNearctic Stakes bringing together thirteen runners and we’ll have the one-two from the 2023 Connaught Cup Stakes doing battle again.

Can Moira make amends for a narrow defeat in the 2022 edition of the E.P. Taylor Stakes after a string of board finishes this year?

The starting point has to be the chalk Moira 5/2 who was narrowly beaten in this race last year after producing a strong late close to be beaten just a neck, and there is no doubt she arrives here in top form.

She was a solid fifth in the 2022 Grade 1 Breeders Cup Filly and Mares Turf on her last run last year and has not been out of the places in four runs this year, finishing second on the first three of those before a six-length romp in the 2023 Grade 2 Canadian Stakes last month.

She steps back up the class ladder here, and with an extra eighth of a mile to cover, everything looks stacked up nicely for the Attard barn star.

However, a big danger to the chalk is sure to be Consumer Spending 6/1 who was a very unlucky loser when finishing sixth, beaten just a length last time in the 2023 Grade2 Ballston Spa Stakes.

He was last into the stretch and switched wide but had to then go inside and he met traffic problems as he went for the rail run.

He had won his previous two stakes races against lesser foes, but is clearly in top form and will be one of the late closers here.

Fev Rover 4/1 who was the odds on chalk in the Canadian Stakes has work to do to make up the ground with Moira, and other in the field that could put it up to the chalk is Charlie Appleby’s Frankel filly With The Moonlight 3/1, who was a strong second behind In Italian in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes earlier in the year and heads in here coming back from a five-month lay.

Moira came right back to her best last time and she looks the most likely winner and looks impossible to keep off the board.

However, at a much bigger price on the board, CONSUMER SPENDING makes plenty of appeal after a very unlucky run last time and she can track the chalk and strike late.

With The Moonlight is respected along with the longshot Aspen Grove who can be excused for her run last time after being fractious at the gate.

Canadian International Stakes

Grade 1 – Purse $750,000 – 1 1/4 Miles – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

Will Nation’s Pride plunder another big Canadian Grade 1 for top handler Charlie Appleby?

Nation’s Pride 1/1 is the short price chalk, and North American race fans will know Charlie Appleby’s star from last year’s Grade 1 Belmont Derby where he was a late closing second, as well as his wins in the 2022 Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational and subsequent win to take the 2022 Grade 3 Jockey Club Derby Invitational.

This season has seen him carry on that strong form, one of the reasons he is the chalk here.

He was last seen winning in Germany, taking the 2023 Grossr Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen by three lengths, and although that was only a minor stakes race, it shows he has trained on from last season and will be a tough foe for these rivals.

His biggest foe looks sure to be the Chad Brown-trained Ashamo 7/2 who has not won for some time, but has been mixing it with some of the best on recent starts, and this is an easier Grade 1 than what he has been contesting recently.

He won the 2022 Grade 1 United Nations Stakes last July and was a good third behind Set Piece in the 2023 Grade 1 Arlington Million on his last run when closing from the rear of the pack.

Another British raider takes his chance here, and that is the Roger Varian-trained Royal Champion 6/1. However, his form does not look at the level of some of these foes and he’ll need to show a jolt of improvement to hit the winner’s enclosure.

A bigger danger is likely to come from the fast-improving Palazzi 4/1 who has won his last three, including a first graded stakes victory last time in the 2023 Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes here at Woodbine.

All of those recent wins have come since stretching out a little further in distance, and the mile and a quarter he covers today will be a perfect setup for his late-closing style.

It’s difficult to see any of the others getting involved but one longshot who may well be worth including in your exotic bets is English Conqueror 20/1 who was fourth in this race in 2021 and has hit the board in a couple of Grade 3 events in the last twelve months.

He was only a length and three quarters behind Palazzi three back and could be the one who sets the speed here, and could stick around, having hit the board over much further.

Adhamo put up a fine performance last time and this is an easier assignment and he can certainly hit the board.

However, it is difficult to get away from the chalk here and NATIONS PRIDE gets a strong vote to grab another big North American Purse for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin.

The improving Palazzi and big longshot English Conqueror should both be fighting for a slice underneath.

Nearctic Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $250,000 – 6 furlongs – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

Can the Chad Brown-trained Masen take advantage of a class drop and get back in the winner’s enclosure today?

A big field of sprinters heads to the gate at 6.14 pm ET for a wide-open race and it is Big Invasion 3/1 who heads the early morning line odds after a strong effort when second in the Harvey Pack Stakes last time.

He met traffic problems there and would have gone close to beating the late closer Thin White Duke had he been able to find the gap earlier.

His overall form is probably the strongest in the race having been a late closing second in the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes where he came from the back of the pack to be beaten just three-quarters of a length.

His only graded stakes win came in the 2022 Grade 3 Quick Call Stakes last summer but he has run very well on several occasions and just about deserves to be the early chalk here.

A very tough foe will come in the form of Masen who ran second in the 2022 Makers Mark Million after shipping from Ireland last year and he has since gone on to win 2022 Grade 3 Poker Stakes in June last year.

He is now coming back from a year layoff and is cutting back from routes to a sprint, which could give plenty of upside considering he has shown plenty of speed over a mile.

The layoff would normally be an issue but his recent drills have been solid and he went five furlongs in a sharp minute flat on the 1st of October.

Outside the top two on the board, and Oceanic 10/1 is one for exotic punters. He is very consistent in this spot and was second in the 2023 Grade 2 Highlander Stakes when just in behind another of today’s foes Lucky Score.

Oceanic was squeezed out shortly after the gates opened and he did well to come from the last spot and can turn that form around.

For longshot players, then we like the look of Remuda 20/1 who had his first try against graded stakes foes last time when finishing a close enough fifth in the 2023 Grade 3 Troy Stakes. He was beaten five lengths but is still lightly raced and should improve further for the extra half a furlong.

It’s a tight race and both Big Invasion and Masen look sure to run big races and it is MASEN that gets a narrow vote to come out on top.

Oceanic is a strong closer and he can be expected to be launching a late stretch run and has a solid chance to grab a slice underneath.
