Centenary Sprint Cup 2023: Lucky Sweynesse Struck Gold

Lucky Sweynesse kicks Wellington into touch to land the Grade 1 Centenary Sprint Cup 2023 and record a third graded stake success and his first Grade 1

The Centenary Sprint Cup

Grade 1 – Purse $1,530,000 – 1200 meters (6 furlongs) – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Upwards

This was always going to be a fast-run race, and from the gate Sight Success and the eventual winner LUCKY SWEYNESSE went head to head.

Sight Success had the inside rail position and as much as he tried Lucky Sweynesse could not get to the lead and Zac Purton had to be content to sit in the second spot and wait to make his move.

As the two leaders battled away up front, Wellington was sat in the ideal stalking position in third spot, and he was alongside Super Wealthy with the perennial slow starter Sky Field at the back of the pack.

As they entered the home stretch it was still Sight Success but Purton now made his move at the 400-meter mark and came to join the leader with Super Wealthy and then Wellington, who got caught for speed and dropped a couple of lengths off the lead.

Sight Success was very game in front and still had half a length on the eventual winner coming to the 200-meter mark but Purton got the front on Lucky Sweynesse with just 150 meters to run.

Wellington was now starting a charge down the outside, but his fierce rival had already got first run and held well to win by a length and a half with the early leader Sight Success running a great race to finish third.

The Centenary Vase

Grade 3 – Purse $497,000 – 1800 meters (1 mile 1 furlong) – Turf – 3 Year-Olds and Up

Senor Toba rallies late to take out the Grade 3 Centenary Vase and hold the fast-finishing favorite Running Glory.

As expected, it was Money Catcher and Ka Ying Star who both broke well from the gate and set the early speed. However, what we expected to be a really fast run race, did not materialize as Silvestre De Sousa on Money Catcher set modest fractions.

Ka Ying Star was content to stalk his rival, while the eventual winner SENOR TOBA was ideally positioned in the third spot, with Looking Great next, and the back pair being the favorite Running Glory and the longshot Glorious Dancer.

As they reached the 700-meter mark, it was here that De Sousa injected some pace on the leader and he quickly put a length between himself and his rivals.

But Ka Ying Star was alert to the move and soon got to the quarters of Money Catcher with Senor Toba pitching into the three lane as they hit the top of the home stretch.

Glorious Dancer was still at the back of the field but was still traveling well. Ka Ying Star got to the lead with 200 meters to go but he was soon challenged and passed by Senor Toba, and Running Glory made a late bid, but Senor Toba held well to win by three-quarters of a length.

Glorious Dancer was a little unlucky in fourth and is one to watch for next time.
