Champions Mile, Sprint Prize & QE II Cup Review

Lucky Sweynesse shows an electric turn of speed to outclass his foes in The Chairmans Sprint at Sha Tin and takes his record to five graded stakes wins on the trot while the horse of a generation Golden Sixty beats old rival California Spangle to win the Grade 1 Champions Mile

Sprint Prize

Grade 1 – Purse $2,548,000 – 1200 meters (6 furlongs) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Just as in his last race, Master Eight blasted from the gate and was intent on trying to go gate to wire, and he led from the chalk and eventual winner LUCKY SWEYNESSE, who was followed by his two main rivals in the betting, Wellington and Sight Success.

There was some interference at the 600 meters (3 furlongs) markers as both Sight Success and Lucky Sweynesse crossed to the rail and impeded Wellington who had to be reined back off heels.

Into the stretch, Lucky Sweynesse took over at the 400-meter mark but Wellington loomed strongly traveling well under Badel, but Lucky Sweynesse widened at the 250-meter mark with a devastating burst of speed which Wellington had no answer to.

Courier Wonder who had come from far back, closed late in the three lane to take the second spot fifty yards from the wire, with Wellington in third and Sight Success rallying late for the fourth spot.

But none could land a blow on the devastating winner.

Champions Mile

Grade 1 – Purse $2,548,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Golden Sixty beats old rival California Spangle to win the G1 Champions Mile, and in turn taking his amazing streak to 15 wins in 18 races?

It was billed as a match race, and as expected it was California Spangle who crossed from his wide gate to set the speed for the chalk Golden Sixty to aim at.

Healthy Happy also broke well but he was dropped in at the rail to stalk the leader, while the chalk and eventual winner Golden Sixty was nicely position on his outside with a clear view of the leader.

As they went down the backstretch, the pace was pretty slow with the opening quarter going in 24.49 secs and the half mile a little quicker at 46.99 secs.

The longshot Voyage Bubble made an early move to third and Ho was content to let Golden Sixty slide back to fourth a couple of lengths from the speed.

Meanwhile the two Aussie raiders My Oberon and Aegon were at the back of the pack as expected.

As they reached the 600 meters (3 furlongs) mark, it was still California Spangle but Voyage Bubble was now just a neck down and Golden Sixty made a move between both foes, with now just 4 lengths covering the field.

They straightened for the stretch drive and California Spangle tried to widen but he could not shake off Golden Sixty, and the champ came there to take the lead at the 300 meters (1 1/2 furlongs) pole, and he quickly widened two lengths clear with Beauty Joy rallying to close late for second.

California Spangle held third bravely from Voyage Bubble who will surely win next time if taking a class drop.

QEII Cup

Grade 1 – Purse $3,185,000 – 2000 meters (1 mile 2 furlongs) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Romantic Warrior proves himself a real champion as he sprints clear in the final furlong to win the QEII Cup for a second year in succession.

As expected, it was the regular speed horse Money Catcher who wanted to be on the speed and surprisingly Tourbillon Diamond, a closer, broke well to sit second, with the chalk and eventual winner ROMANTIC WARRIOR sitting in a nice stalking spot in third on the rail.

Out of the clubhouse turn and Money Catcher was setting just a moderate gallop and there were just five lengths covering the field.

There was little change down the backstretch but the leader injected some pace into the race as they reached the 700 meters (3 ½ furlongs) mark and he stole three lengths on the pack.

But Romantic Warrior was still traveling strongly as he pitched into the two-lane at the top of the stretch.

He joined and passed the long-time leader with 300 meters (1 ½ furlongs) to the wire and quickly put the race in safe keeping, crossing the wire in hand to win by two lengths.

Prognosis and Dubai Honour both rallied from far back to take second and third spots respectively, with Money Catcher who held well for fourth, the next to cross the wire.
