Charles Town Oaks & Charles Town Classic Preview

A 13-race card at Charles Town racecourse sees no less than nine stakes races being run for $2.9 million in purse money, and the highlights are the G2 2023 Charles Town Classic Stakes with a purse of $1,000,000 and the G3 2023 Charles Town Oaks for the three-year-old fillies with a purse of $750,00 on the line.

Dale Romans will be looking for his four-year-old Giant Game to get back in the winner’s circle after a solid performance in the 2023 Grade 1 Whitney Stakes last time, while in the Charles Town Oaks, everybody is talking about Hoosier Philly who was impressive in romping over Wet Paint last time, where she didn’t come out of first gear and won easily in hand.

Charles Town Classic Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $1,000,000 – 1 1/8 miles – Dirt – 3-Year-Olds and Up

Giant Game 5/2 is the early morning line chalk and the Dale Romans trained colt looks sure to run a big race here.

He was beaten eleven lengths in the 2023 Grade 1 Whitney Stakes last time, coming up against the likes of superstars Zandon and Cody’s Wish, and of course, he meets nothing of that caliber today.

He beat another of today’s rivals Skippy Longstocking 3/1 in the 2023 Grade 3 Cornhusker Handicap at Prairie Meadows two back and went gate to wire that day, and as his name implies, he was game on the speed and toughed it out to win by a length and three quarters.

Skippy Longstocking is his nearest rival on the morning line odds but he should not be a threat to the chalk and has often flattered to deceive, and may once again be playing for a spot underneath.

He has won three of his last five races at Grade 3 level but just seems to find this spot that bit tougher to get his head in front.

One that should put it up to the chalk is Doppelganger 6/1, who has won four of his last five, with the only defeat coming against tougher foes in the 2023 Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap behind Cody’s Wish and Zandon.

Three back, he won the 2023 Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct when a 17/1 longshot. He made a deep close that day and was still six lengths off the speed as they hit the top of the stretch but got up late. He should get a nice pace set up today.

At bigger prices on the boards, two that should be of interest to exotics players are Perfect Flight 15/1 and O’Connor 8/1

O’Connor looks the interesting foe having only had five runs stateside since coming from Chile. He was behind Skippylongstocking four back but has since finished third in the Grade 3 Ghostzapper Stakes two back

Giant Game will be the pick of many handicappers and he’ll try to go gate to wire and should hit the board.

The one we like as a nice across-the-board play is DOPPELGANGER who caused a shock in the Carter Handicap three back, and he will surely stalk and aim to strike late.

Perfect Flight and O’Connor are longshots to include in exotics, and Call Me Fast is another sure to be battling for a slice underneath.

Charles Town Oaks

Grade 3 – Purse $750,000 – 7 furlongs – Dirt – 3-Year-Old Fillies

Hoosier Philly 3/1 is the standout on form here and she is the early chalk.

The Amoss-trained filly was a winner at the minor stakes level when she romped home in hand to win the 2023 Monomoy Girl Stakes at Ellis Park, where she had star filly Wet Paint trailing in her hoofprints.

That performance was from the top drawer, and although this is a step back up the class ladder, she is still competing at a lower level than her previous four assignments which all came at the Grade 2 level.

She was second in the 2023 Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, and will surely attempt to go gate to wire here.

Her main foe looks to be Undervalued Asset 4/1 from the barn of Chad Brown, and this is a filly that is very much on the upgrade.

She was second in the 2023 Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes back in February but has since hit the winners enclosure, taking an allowance stakes at Saratoga in July. She has plenty of upside after just five career starts and looks to be the chalk’s biggest foe here.

Outside the top two on the board, Imonra 6/1 has to enter calculations. She is another lightly raced filly and has not missed the board in six starts, including two wins.

She won a $75k Optional Claimer two back but took a step up the class ladder last time when beaten just two lengths in the 2023 Grade 3 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows, and her last Beyer Speed figure of 87 was a career-best.

She has plenty of speed but can sit in a stalking position and should get the ideal race set up with Hoosier Philly setting the fractions.

It’s difficult to see past these top three on the board but a longshot of interest for exotics players is Chismosa 10/1, who chased home the highly rated Eda in the 2023 Grade 2 Great Lady M Stakes at Los Alamitos Racecourse two back, and she has since posted another fine second in a minor stakes race last time.

She’ll be a deep closer here and has a fine chance to grab a share of this huge three-quarter million-dollar purse.

Undervalued Asset and Imonra are fillies on an upward curve and should be in the mix as they come down to the wire. Both have solid prospects of hitting the board.

However, the win of HOOSIER PHILLY against Wet Paint was so visually impressive, and she gets the vote to put this field to the sword.

Chismosa will be closing late and is one to include in exotics.
