Cheveley Park Stakes & Middle Park Stakes Odds

Saturday sees top-class Grade 1 action at Newmarket as Vandeek seeks to remain unbeaten and win the 2023 Middle Park Stakes, while Relief Rally will be the chalk for the Cheveley Park Stakes.

Can Vandeek confirm superiority over River Tiber, and win his fourth race on the bounce, and go into the winter as favorite for the 2024 2000 Guineas?

Vandeek 9/4 has gone from strength to strength since breaking the maiden tag at Nottingham in July and last time took his form to a new level when winning the 2023 Grade 1 Prix Morny where he had River Tiber two lengths away in third spot.

That was his third victory, and two back he won the 2023 Grade 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood. He likes to track the early speed and should get the ideal race set up with Jasour likely to be on the speed.

Jasour was behind Vandeek in the Prix Morny on very heavy turf but had won his previous two including the 2023 Grade 2 July Stakes two back. That was a smart performance, and if the Newmarket turf course is riding faster, we can expect a strong showing from the Cox inmate.

We mentioned River Tiber earlier and he is the chalk. He was caught flat-footed when urged by Ryan Moore last time, and ground conditions may not have helped, but he was two lengths behind, so it’s difficult to see him winning.

Task Force won the 2023 Listed Champion Two-Year-Old Trophy Stakes at Ripon on his latest assignment and has a speed rating of 100. He needs to take a step forward but that’s impossible.

The one at huge odds that seems to have gone under the radar is Givemethebeatboys who has performed well all season.

He broke the maiden tag first time and showed smart form when stepped up the class ladder to win the 2023 Grade 3 Marble Hill Stakes when closing late and leading right under the wire.

He then went to Royal Ascot when fourth in the 2023 Grade 2 Coventry Stakes where he was just a length and a half behind today’s chalk River Tiber.

He hit the board when taking in the Grade 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes last time, and has closed late on all starts, and although he looks in need of a stretchout, he’ll be the strongest finisher here.

It’s tough to see Vandeek being off the board and he could quite easily improve and win again but offers little value for handicappers. The same can be said for River Tiber.

The tentative selection at huge odds is GIVEMETHEBEATBOYS who has performed to a high level and could get a very quick pace to close into.

Jasour is another big danger to the top two in the betting and should be battling for a slice of this healthy purse.

Cheveley Park Stakes

Grade 1 – Purse $329,000 – 6 furlongs – Turf – 2-Year-Old Fillies

Can Relief Rally beat the unbeaten French Raider Jasner’s Secret and register her first success at the Grade 1 level?

We start with the chalk Relief Rally who has won four of her five starts and was very unlucky not to have made that a clean sweep as she just failed with a late close when second in the 2023 Grade 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

All of her wins have come with late rallies and she is a very talented filly who must be a leading player for the 2024 1000 Guineas Stakes if winning this.

She has already beaten plenty of these foes, and the main danger may well be the French filly Jasner’s Secret.

The Lerner-trained filly is two from two and broke the maiden tag at Deauville in July before following up back at the same track when stepping up the class ladder to take a minor stakes race in August.

Interestingly, top jockey Christophe Soumillon travels over for the ride, but his filly will need to take a big step forward against some very smart and proven graded stakes fillies.

One filly who has to be high on any handicapper’s shortlist is Porta Fortuna who took her record to three from three when taking the 2023 Grade 3 Albany Fillies Stakes at Ascot in June after stalking the early speed.

She has since put in an even better effort when second against the Colts in the 2023 Grade 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes and was then third back in against her own sex in the 2023 Grade 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh.

She gets a class drop and should not be underestimated.

If you are playing the exotics, then two at bigger prices that should be on your radar are Cherry Blossom and Sacred Angel.

The O’Brien runner Cherry Blossom was beaten just a length by Relief Rally in the 2023 Lowther Stakes and ran another fine race when second of twenty-three runners in the Goffs Million Stakes last Saturday. She’ll likely try and go gate to wire here.

Sacred Angel broke the maiden tag at the second attempt at Newmarket and then stepped up the class ladder to take the 2023 Grade 3 Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot on her next try. Her last run when fourth in the 2023 Grade 1 Prix Morny came against the colts and she has to be a danger back against her own sex.

Porta Fortuna has done nothing wrong all season and on the downgrade looks like a lock to hit the board, and she should make it tough for the chalk.

If it was not for an unlucky run at Royal Ascot, we’d be looking at RELIEF RALLY going for a six-timer and she gets a very confident vote.

Sacred Angel and Cherry Blossom should be battling for a slice underneath.
