Capella Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $525,000 – 1200 metres – Dirt – 3-Year-Olds and UP

Another big field here at Nakayama Racecourse with a field of 13 due to go to post for this Grade 3 Capella Stakes with a purse of $525,000.

Leading British rider Tom Marquand has been secured to ride the Yoshito Yahagi-trained Justin and this one looks to have his work cut out to make an impression here.

Atid looks like an interesting contender. He was on a steep upward curve before failing to finish last time, but there were valid excuses and his previous wins in stakes company give him a sound chance on this first try in graded stakes company. Three of his four wins have come over this 1200-metre distance and the last of those was here at Nakayama in September.

Nakayama Racecourse hosted the Nagatsuki Stakes back in September and we saw a new course record for today’s distance set by Hakodate Busho who ran the 1200 metres in 1:08.4 secs. That win was no fluke as the horse is now three wins from his last 5 races and is sure to set a strong pace here.

One of the interesting potential longshots here is the Takuya Ono-ridden Over Nexus who has been in fine form recently but has been running over further. No doubt he has the talent and won the Autumn Leaf Stakes last time with some of these behind. He will no doubt be closing late here over this cut back to 1200 metres.

A few three-year-olds that look interesting here are Remake, the Xinao Okada-trained Kurojishi Joe, and Yamato Kosei who all have solid form heading into this assignment.

If ever you wanted the dream horse to own then Ryuno Yukina is the horse, and at 7 years old may probably have to give best to one of his younger rivals, but has finished either first or second in 13 of his last 15 races. He surely must have a great chance of hitting the frame going up in class today.

With this race sure to be run at a strong pace then the closing style of Over Nexus should give this one a great chance to secure a slice of the purse money today.

The main pick here though is YAMATO KOSEI who is another three-year-old and has won his last three. Did not really show much as a two-year-old but is making giant strides now and can take this step up the class ladder today.

Of the others then Ryuno Yukina can keep his amazing board streak going and secure another slice of the purse money.

Chunichi Shimbun Hai Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $600,000 – 2000 metres – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

With 17 runners due to go to post for this Grade 3 handicap, it is a tough puzzle to solve with lots of horses in with a chance here.

Ask Wild More looks like an interesting runner here who is taking a big drop in class from its last three runs. Was a winner of a Grade 2 in May here at Chukyo when beating the 2200 metre track record and should enjoy this easier assignment.

Cantor is a previous course and distance winner and looks to have been prepared for this race. He won the Sado Stakes back in July and then came back from a layoff to run a solid 4th in the Grade 2 Copa Republika Argentina at Tokyo at the beginning of November which should have made him 100% race fit and he has the back class to be one of the major players here.

Explosion has won 3 from his last 5 runs and has been given a break since a disappointing run in a Grade 3 at Niigata in September and could be interesting as a possible longshot here. He’ll need to improve but has some very good form at the track.

Killer Ability is one of the three-year-olds entered here and he is still very unexposed after just seven career starts. He was a poor eighth last time in the Copa Republika Argentina, but is better judged on his three previous runs in Grade 1 company and holds a strong chance here.

Prognosis is very lightly raced for a four-year-old having only had a total of six races, and he has won four of those and was placed in the other two which were a Grade 3 and a Listed Stakes last time. He is definitely on an upward curve and is sure to be one of the favorites here.

With eighteen runners it is going to be difficult to pick a winner, but Ask Wild More looks to hold a strong chance and could well be better class than this field which is high in quantity but low in quality.

The main selection has to be the four-year-old PROGNOSIS who is ultra-consistent and looks like a solid bet to reach the frame here.

Killer Ability has to overcome a poor run last time but his previous graded stakes form gives him a very good chance on the form book, and he’ll be well fancied here for trainer Takashi Saito.
