Clark Stakes 2023: Trademark a nose winner

Churchill Downs Black Friday card featured two excellent graded races in the shape of the Clark Stakes 2023 and Mrs.Revere Stakes.

The headline race of the day was the Clark Stakes. Worth a total of $600,000, it was Trademark who pulled off the minor upset and took home the spoils as he edged past the battling First Mission in game fashion.

The day was rounded off with the Mrs.Revere Stakes where Heavenly Sunday justified her tag as favorite to win her first graded prize since capturing the 2023 Edgewood Stakes. Showing that she was the class horse of the contest, she won the race emphatically by ten lengths.

  2. First Mission +300
  3. Il Miracolo +400

This year’s Clark Stakes was won in thrilling fashion as Trademark battled bravely to edge out First Mission in a thriller of a finish.

Keen to make it a briskly run affair, Film Star hit the front early and was happy to pull the rest of the field along.

With the order of the race remaining largely unchanged, keeping Film Star company was First Mission and the two charged on at the head of the field.

Rounding the far turn in unison, it was First Mission who gained the advantage and hit the home straight with a slim lead.

As Film Star started to feel the pinch and retreated back through the field, First Mission was left out in front and in the clear.

Working his way into the race was Trademark, travelling strongly, he slowly started to eat into First Mission’s lead and with just a half furlong left to run drew alongsides.

With neither runner refusing to give an inch, it looked like the two wouldn’t be separated. However, with the line fast approaching Trademark was able to pull out a little more and pulled off the biggest win of his career by the barest of margins.

Proving to be in a class all of her own, she pulled clear from the rest of the field as she hit the home straight.

Travelling like a dream, Heavenly Sunday’s jockey, Florent Geroux asked her to go and win her race and she duly responded.

Showing the rest of her rivals a clear set of hooves, the race was over by the furlong pole.

Finishing ten lengths clear of her rivals, she looks well primed to compete in some big races before the end of the year.
