Comely Stakes 2022 & Long Island Recap

Three races caught the eye this past Friday at Aqueduct in the form of two Grade 3 contests the Long Island and Comely Stakes 2022 as well as the 6 furlong turf sprint championship.

Here is everything that happened.

Comely Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and 1 furlong, dirt, open to horses three and over. Total prize pool £150,000

  1. Sixtythreecaliber +1120
  2. Kathleen O – Evens
  3. Morning Matcha +900

The Comely Stakes 2022 saw a shock as outsider Sixtythreecaliber held off the strongly fancied Kathleen O to land the first Graded Stakes race of her career.

Heading into the race following a success in the Seneca Overnight Stakes, she arrived in good form but had plenty to prove against some established rivals.

Always content to sit up with the pace, Sixtythreecaliber made her move as the runners approached the home turn, breezing past longtime leader Tizzy In The Sky.

With a run on the field, Sixtythreecaliber’s jockey Kendrick Carmouche pressed the go button with a few furlongs to go. Kathleen O, who was making her first appearance following seven months off the track always looked like the main danger and despite pulling in within a length of Sixtythreecaliber she never looked like she had the speed or fitness to get past.

Long Island Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and 3/8, turf, open to fillies and mares aged three and over. Total prize pool $300,000

  1. Temple City Terror -154
  2. Rocky Sky +430
  3. Kalifornia Queen +660

The biggest prize on offer on Aqueduct’s Friday card came in the Long Island Stakes. Raced on the Aqueduct turf, Chad Brown was hoping to take the prize home and fielded three of the seven runners.

Brown had to overcome the Brendan Walsh trained Temple City Terror who was looking to build on some consistent performances this season.

As the race developed it was clear that Brown wanted to stretch the legs of the favorite and his charge Rocky Sky soon established a comfortable lead at the head of the field.

Rounding for home in the lead, Temple City Terror under Jose Ortiz always seemed to be travelling well and slowly ate into the long time leader’s lead.

With just a furlong to run, Temple City Terror finally pulled alongside and pulled clear. Despite a late rally from the ailing Rocky Sky, Temple City Terror held on for another cosy success.

Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship

6 furlongs, turf, open to horses three and over. Total prize pool $150,000

  1. Nothing Better +2000
  2. Anaconda +1200
  3. Thin White Duke +650

The Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship was the most competitive race of the day with all twelve runners in with a shout of victory.

Before the race, many were left wondering as to whether Dancing Buck could add this sprint title to the Belmont Sprint he won earlier in the year.  However a tricky stall assignment in gate 12 would make it an interesting race.

Bouncing out of the gate and breaking best of all was the 20/1 shot Nothing Better. Grabbing the inside rail, Nothing Better and jockey Horacio Karamonos were left to dictate things up front.

Able to set the fractions, Karamonos quietly lifted Nothing Better through the gears and as he entered the home turn he had quickly put some distance between him and the rest of the field.

Having tracked his way from the outside to the front, Dancing Buck quickly found himself and second and began eating into Nothing Better’s lead. Drawing alongside in the final furlong it looked like it was Dancing Buck’s race to win.

However, Nothing Better found an extra gear and fought back at his more illustrious rival. Putting daylight between them once again, Dancing Buck’s challenge quickly faded. On the outside Anaconda tried to swoop late but his challenge was a case of too little too late as Nothing Better gamely held on for the biggest win of his career.

Thin White Duke picked his way through the field to finish a never nearer third.
