Coolmore Turf Mile Odds, Field & Predictions

There is the equine equivalent of Ryder Cup rivalry in a high-quality edition of the G1 Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland on Saturday, with local talent Up To The Mark, Annapolis and Set Piece pitted against high-class British shipper Master Of The Seas.

G1, $1m, 1m turf, 3yo+, 5.45pm ET

There is an exciting Europe v USA vibe in the Coolmore Turf Mile, the seven-figure centrepiece of a stakes-heavy Saturday at Keeneland, with a paid berth into the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile to add further spice to the encounter.

In the stars-and-stripes corner is Up To The Mark (5-2), who has been a revelation since being switched to the lawn, going four-for-five and winning the 2023 G1 Turf Classic over a mile-eighth at Churchill Downs and the 2023 G1 Manhattan over ten furlongs at Belmont Park.

There may be more to come, but the cutback is possibly not optimal, as he was a comfortably beaten third in the 2023 G1 Maker’s Mark Mile over course and distance.

In the union-jack corner is Master Of The Seas (2-1), who has returned to his peak after a fairly unproductive time in Dubai this spring. He was an easy winner of the 2023 G2 Summer Mile at Royal Ascot before shipping to Canada for the 2023 G1 Woodbine Mile, when he was a heavy chalk to see off overmatched rivals and did so in style, cruising by three and three-quarter lengths.

He is a more natural fit at a mile than Up To The Mark, and has a late-closing change of gear that could prove decisive against the stronger stayer.

Up To The Mark’s barnmate Annapolis (6-1) won this race 12 months ago in a fast time when driving clear for a dominant score, with Set Piece (5-1) beaten a length and three-quarters into fourth and Atone (10-1) eighth, but it is a tougher race this year. Moreover, Annapolis has to rebound from a moderate showing at Kentucky Downs, but not every horse likes that track and he has solid board credentials.

Set Piece signed for the biggest win of his career last time out when taking the 2023 G1 Arlington Million at Colonial Downs over ten furlongs, but looks vulnerable against the two classy principals at a track where he is zero-for-two.

British import Indestructible (8-1) is rated some way inferior to Master Of The Seas on the European scale, and missed the board in all three G1 starts after winning the 2023 G3 Craven over a mile at Newmarket. This change in environment will need to move him up a long way.

Stitched (15-1) was a longshot runner-up in the 2023 G3 Mint Millions over a mile at Kentucky Downs, in which Atone and Annapolis ran fourth and fifth, and had previously won the 2023 G2 Wise Dan at Ellis Park over a mile-sixteenth at 46-1. He was a length and a quarter ahead of Set Piece there, with Harlan Estate (20-1) sixth, and could outrun his odds again.

This is a strong contest, but the British shipper MASTER OF THE SEAS brings G1-winning form and has a greater affinity for a mile than his main rival.
