Dante Stakes & More York Graded Races Recap

The Dante Festival is one of York’s top meetings with several days of top-class horse racing, perhaps the highlight of the festival is the Dante Stakes, an unmissable Group 2 flat race

Clipper Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $169,600 – 6 Furlongs – Turf – 3-Year-Olds And Up

Azure Blue makes it four wins from her last five starts and secures her first career graded stakes victory in the process.

As they left the gates the strongly back chalk Marshman bobbled at the gate and was soon at the rear of the field as Art Power took them along on the pace and he was followed closely by Highfield Princess and the Aussie raider The Astrologist.

The race changed complexion dramatically after just two furlongs when the Godolphin runner Creative Force went wrong and was pulled up sharply.

Meanwhile the pace up front was sharp and as they went through halfway, it was still Art Power leading, but the chalk Marshman had recovered from his slow start and was moving into contention stylishly, while the eventual winner AZURE BLUE was also traveling smoothly in mid-pack.

As they hit the two-furlong pole it was here that Marshman came there in hand under jockey Lee and he looked like he would win easily but as they hit the furlong pole he backed out of it and the filly Highfield Princess took over.

But now Azure Blue was let loose and she was thundering home and closing late. She got the lead 50 yards from the wire and widened to win by half a length from Highfield Princess who held well for the second spot. Commanche Falls ran another fine race to close late for the third spot, with the 50/1 longshot Annaf rallying late for fourth.

Middleton Fillies Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $189,250 – 1 mile 2 Furlongs and 56 yards – Turf – 4-Year-Olds And Up

Free Wind comes back from a long layoff to outbattle Rogue Millenium in the final furlong and take the Grade 2 Middleton Fillies Stakes at York.

There was a small field of seven runners for this and the chalk Free Wind jumped the gates well but was soon reined back to mid-pack by Frankie Dettori to adopt her usual stalking tactics.

Meanwhile, Aristia had adopted her customary role on the speed and she was followed closely in the two lane by Poptronic who was just a length down in second with the rest of the filed tightly bunched.

The pace was slow and just four lengths were covering the seven runners as they went down the backstretch. The strongly backed chalk and eventual winner FREE WIND was running in fifth, while the other fancied runner Sea Silk Road was on her inside with the longshot Rogue Millenium at the back of the field.

As they hit the top of the long stretch Aristia tried to kick but came under a drive and soon backed out with Poptronic going to the lead 3 furlongs from the wire. It was here though that Detorri asked Free Wind to cover the move and she moved stylishly into the second spot.

Detorri hit the drive position but his filly had a battle as Rogue Millenium had closed from the back and looked a big danger at the furlong pole. The two set down for the drive to the wire, neither giving an inch.

But in the shadows of the wire, Free Wind battled bravely to edge the longshot by half a length with Poptronic holding well for third, with State Occasion rallying for fourth.

Dante Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $235,000 – 1 mile 2 furlongs and 56 yards – Turf – 3-Year-Olds

The Foxes shows his class to hold off the late closing effort of White Birch and set himself up for a tilt at the Derby at Epsom in June.

The Dante Stakes was an unusually big field for this Derby trial and the betting was 9/2 the field on the board with the Sir Michael Stoute barn’s Passenger strongly bet just before post time.

As the gates opened, the usual slow start came from White Birch, and the grey was settled off the speed, while up front it was Liberty Lane who was blazing away in front, while the chalk was settled in mid-pack alongside the eventual winner THE FOXES.

As they sped down the backstretch, Liberty Lane was joined in the two lane by the longshot Dancing Magic with Killybegs Warrior next with clear daylight in the three lane.

Frankie Dettori had the well-fancied Epictetus in hand at the back of the main group and three from the back.

As they hit the far turn, the leader quickened again but Passenger was now poised in behind but got caught in a pocket, while the winner The Foxes made his move on the inside.

As they hit the final furlong The Foxes came to challenge Liberty Lane and took over with a furlong to run. However, White Birch was now closing fast and made the winner battle for a half-length win.

Passenger closed late to be third after meeting traffic problems more than once with Continuous in the fourth spot.

Yorkshire Cup Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $220,000 – 1 mile 5 furlongs and 188 yards – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Gialvellotto produces a shock to win the Yorkshire Cup Stakes and put himself in line for a shot at The Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June.

What a race we had in prospect but it was a shock result that nobody expected.

As the flag went up and the gates opened, it was no surprise that last year all the way Lonsdale Cup winner Quickthorn was the one to set the speed. He stayed wide of the other five runners in the first two furlongs before getting a couple of lengths clear and gradually crossing over to the rail position.

It was not a furious pace and the field went along in Indian file down the backstretch. This was going to be a tactical affair with nobody playing their cards until they hit the stretch.

On the far turn, the leader injected some pace and the eventual winner GIAVELLOTTO was still near the back of the field and he got slightly caught for pace.

Quickthorn widened again as they hit the top of the long stretch and it was here that Broome was sent in pursuit, while Eldar Eldarov was also caught flat-footed and seemed to be getting outsped.

As they hit the two-furlong pole it was still Quickthorn but both Siskany and the eventual winner were now in hot pursuit, and at a furlong and a half from the wire Giavellotto went to the lead and widened well by two lengths but he had to fend off one final challenger in Eldar Eldarov who closed late and fast but just failed by half a length to overhaul the longshot.

Broome held well for third after suffering interference from Quickthorn who finished a close fourth.
