Del Mar Oaks
The first three homes in the Grade 2 San Clemente renews rivalry on Saturday, stepping up a furlong from last month’s encounter. Madone sprang something of a surprise there, closing fast and late to get up in the final strides and beat odds-on favorite Going Global by half a length, with never-nearer Tetragonal a length back in third.
Tetragonal is 3lb worse off today and looks booked for a supporting role again, but the duel between the San Clemente principals is a compelling one. Madone was bouncing back from a stale effort on her previous start when well beaten by Going Global at Santa Anita, but that was off only a three-week layoff and she has had a longer break here. She’s also three-for-three at Del Mar, whereas Going Global has done all her winning at Santa Anita but should be suited by the return to a longer distance.
There won’t be a lot in it, but Madone is going forward and her course record is a big tick in the right box. Fluffy Socks ships from the east coast and is 1-1 at Del Mar after winning the Jimmy Durante last November, with Javanica in second place, but she is winless in 2021.

Del Mar Mile
Race fitness looks the key to Saturday’s supporting feature, with Smooth Like Strait raring to go back at a more suitable trip after just being run out of it over nine furlongs in the Grade 2 Eddie Read here last month.
The four-year-old Grade 1 winner can revert to his habitual front-running tactics at a track where he has finished out of the first two only once, and that on his lifetime debut, and he could be too fast for a couple of returning warriors to catch.
Mo Forza won this race 12 months ago but hasn’t been seen since October 2020, and his form after such a lengthy absence has to be taken on trust. Hit The Road finished a neck in front of Smooth Like Strait when winning the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile in March, but has been away since sustaining a minor injury in defeat at Keeneland the following month and this is a tough spot for a comeback.

Torrey Pines Stakes
Peter Miller heads the trainer’s standings at Del Mar this summer and can take another step towards the title with Forest Caraway, who tuned up for this with a taking success over six furlongs here three weeks ago. She drew off handsomely to score by three and a quarter lengths, and the extra quarter-mile looks right up her street.
Lady Mystify wired the field over track and trip last time and should make another bold bid, although this is a jump in class, while Private Mission also likes to lead they may just set up the race for Forest Caraway.
