The distaff half of the racing equation held sway on the Aqueduct lawn over the weekend, with Lady Edith an impressive winner of the ungraded Floral Park Stakes on Sunday afternoon. Twenty-four hours earlier, it was Skims taking center stage when getting off the mark at the stakes level with a gutsy success in the G2 Sands Point.

So easy for Edith
Out of luck with Pizza Bianca the day before, trainer Christophe Clement gained a little compensation when Lady Edith led home a barn exacta in the Floral Park Stakes, the main event at Aqueduct – Belmont at the Big A – on Sunday.
Last year’s winner Too Sexy cut out steady early fractions but barn mate and 2-5 favorite Lady Edith was always on the premises and eased past the pace-setter at the top of the lane. The race was soon over; Lady Edith opened up and cruised away under Joel Rosario, winning eased down by three lengths from Too Sexy, with four lengths back to second-choice Can’t Buy Love in third. The time was 1:10 and three-fifths, in a race diminished by the scratch of the well-fancied Kept Waiting.
“Both these horses like six furlongs better than five and a half, it’s a bigger difference than you think,” said Clement. “Six is not the same kind of race where they jump off and go. It was a slow pace today and they finished well.”
This was the third stakes victory of Lady Edith’s career and her first success since joining Clement’s barn in the spring. She is likely to renew rivalry with Too Sexy in another stakes over course and distance on November 27.

Skims steps right up
Revenge is sweet, and so is the taste of success, and Skims got the full flavor when making her stakes breakthrough in the Sands Point, the highlight at Aqueduct on Saturday.
The last time they met Skims came off second-best to Vergara, but here the 9-2 fourth-choice turned the tables with an authoritative display, sitting in behind the pace of Hail To before making a smooth move on the far turn under John Velazquez to take control. Skims took daylight into the stretch and maintained it to the line, turning back the tepid challenge of Vergara to win by a length in a time of 1:51 and change.
Eminent Victor rallied for third, a length and a quarter further back, with the comeback favorite Pizza Bianca nearest at the finish in the fourth spot after struggling to overcome her outside post.
“This filly wants to go a distance of ground,” said trainer Shug McGaughey, winning the Sands Point for a second time. “We might give her some time off this year or see if she wants to go again.”

McGaughey mentioned the G1 American Oaks, over ten furlongs at Santa Anita on December 26, as a possible target for Skims, who was gaining due reward after hitting the board in three stakes this year and is now unbeaten in two starts at the Big A.
