The G3 Franklin Stakes is open to three-year-old and up fillies and mares who will compete for the purse of $300,000. On the turf surface, the participants will cover the distance of five and half furlongs, with Twilight Gleaming (7-2) being the leading victory candidate. The Wesley Ward bound bay has eight starts under belt and she’s never finished worse than second.
In 2021, she broke her maiden at second attempt, then took second place in the G2 Queen Mary Stakes during the Royall Ascot meeting, upon which Twilight Gleaming triumphed in France. The daughter of National Defence concluded her two-year-old campaign in the G2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. In the ongoing season, she started with second place in a Listed where she scored next time out. Her most recent outing happened in August when the bay prevailed at the black-type scene.
The trainer didn’t press the filly at all in 2022, so she could benefit from being quite fresh on Sunday, moreover, she belongs among the participants carrying the smallest weight because she’s just a three-year-old.
Caravel (4-1) could be her most serious rival if she manages to make amends for her disappointing performance in the G2 Presque Isle Down Masters Stakes. The five-year-old mare is a very experienced Brad Cox’s trainee as she’s run eighteen times to bag ten victories ranging from maidens to black-type and Listed events while in 2021, she scored the G3 Caress Stakes and even placed among the elite. Caravel bagged another G3 in June 2022 despite carrying a big weight but failed to draw on that effort in this year’s Caress Stakes.
Subsequently, she won a Listed in front of Change of Control (5-1) and finished fourth in the mentioned G2 after she weakened in the closing stages. She should enjoy the shorter trip here. Michelle Lovell relies on six-year-old Change of Control is quite a consistent sprinter with two G3 wins to her. In 2022, she won a black-type, however, she lost to Caravel in August, and then had no brighter moment in the G2 Presque Isle Down Masters Stakes. One flop shouldn’t entirely discard her here, moreover, she won’t carry the biggest weight this time.
Four-year-old Bout Time (6-1) also didn’t impress on her most recent outing as she transformed her premiere start at the Graded stage into only sixth place. After she easily bagged a black-type race, her effort was disappointing but she could bounce back on Sunday. The last to mention is Illegal Smile (4-1) who is Also Eligible for the event. Last time out, she took third place behind Caravel and Change of Control at the Listed scene but was beaten only narrowly.

Twilight Gleaming because her class should be enough to bag this, while the small weight should help her here. Caravel looks dangerous, though.
