All the big-race action at Santa Anita on Saturday was on the lawn, and Cabo Spirit was the headliner after doing all his best work late to take the G2 Twilight Derby. Phil D’Amato swept up the other Graded stakes, sending out Going Global for a likely valedictory success in the G2 Goldikova and Rhea Moon for her first stakes score in the G3 Autumn Miss. Cabo shows fighting spirit
Better late than never, they say, and Cabo Spirit left it pretty late in the Twilight Derby at Santa Anita on Saturday, getting up in the last three strides to grab the dollars by a half-length.
Cabo Spirit’s task was made considerably easier by the late scratch of morning-line favourite War At Sea, but it still wasn’t easy. Joe Bravo had plenty of horse on the turn but nowhere to go, so he had to wait on the 5-2 second-choice until the gaps opened in mid-stretch, whereupon Cabo Spirit took off, running down the game favourite Speaking Scout to stop the clock in 1:49 and two-fifths. Perfect Flight took third, a length and three-quarters further back.

This was the biggest win of Cabo Spirit’s career, following an earlier score in the G3 La Jolla at Del Mar. His trainer George Papaprodromou will now aim the gelding at the G1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar on December 3.

G2, $200,000, 1m turf, 3yo+ fillies/mares
Global domination
What a way to say goodbye. Going Global almost certainly brought down the curtain on a fine career when coming home a dominant winner of the Goldikova Stakes 2022
The 1-5 favorite took over from front-running barnmate Burgoo Alley at the top of the lane and quickly surged clear under Umberto Rispoli, keeping on strongly to beat the rallying England’s Rose by a length and a half, with longshot Karakatsie three and a half lengths away in third. The time was 1:33 and four-fifths.

Going Global, winner of ten of her 17 races including last year’s G1 Del Mar Oaks, will now go to the sales next month as a broodmare prospect, although she may yet race again depending on the purchaser. “She’s been a joy to train,” said Phil D’Amato.
Autumn Miss Stakes
G3, $100,000, 1m turf, 3yo fillies
Moon on the rise
Later on, Phil D’Amato completed a Saturday four-timer in stakes when Rhea Moon made a successful stakes debut in the Autumn Miss.
The 6-1 third-choice still had plenty of work to do turning for home, but Juan Hernandez brought her five wide down the lane and she quickened to the lead, extending her advantage all the way to the line to beat the fast-finishing Nadette by a length and a quarter in a time of 1:34 and two-fifths. Longshot Kitty Katana was third, three-quarters of a length away, while favorite Cairo Memories faded into fifth.

Rhea Moon began her career in Ireland and took five tries to break her maiden, but has moved up swiftly since then. Her next target is the G1 American Oaks back here over ten furlongs on December 26.
