The first big race of the day came in the Torrey Pines Stakes. Only six horses lined up to take their chance in this year’s renewal but the field was packed with quality.

Leading the betting was the Phil D’Amato trained Desert Dawn who was looking to build on her second place in Group 1 company last time out.

However there were dangers everywhere you looked.

One of the most unexposed horses was Midnight Memories and it was Midnight Memories who bolted out of the starting stalls the quickest.

Allowed a soft time of things out front, jockey Ramon Vazquez was able to run the race he wanted, and it was clear from the first few furlongs that Midnight Memories, Desert Dawn and Grace Adler would be battling it out for top honours.

Grace Adler was the first to crack, leaving it as a match race between Midnight Memories and Desert Dawn.

As the two rounded the final turn, they were neck and neck and stride for stride. Swooping around the outside it was Desert Dawn who looked the more likely winner but she just couldn’t get past the long time leader.

Using the rail to guide her home, Midnight Memories kept finding and finding, edging out her more illustrious opponent by one length.

Still relatively unexposed it will be fascinating to see where she ends up next.

Green Flash

Grade 3, 5 furlongs, turf, open to horses three and older. Total prize pool $150,000

  1. Lieutenant Dan +100
  2. Lane Way +800
  3. Coulthard +1600

Lieutenant Dan added to his impressive resume of wins with a success in the Grade 3 Green Flash.

In what was a muddling race pace wise, Lieutenant Dan who headed to Del Mar off the back of a lengthy break always found himself up with the pace and despite coming under a heap of pressure managed to find plenty up the  home straight to win by a couple of lengths.

By virtue of winning, Lieutenant Dan will take his place in this season’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and will be expecting to run a big race there.

Lane Way and Coulthard both ran big races and held on to finish second and third respectively.
